King of Cheese Steaks

Alex's Brown Bag Deli

FoodI’ve had a lot of Cheese Steaks in my time, and frankly have been disappointed with nearly all of them. I couldn’t comprehend why people would go for a sandwich that came across as bland as the Cheese Steak. But one bite of the sandwich at Alex’s Brown Bag Deli and I finally became a Cheese Steak believer.

What’s the difference, you ask? Well, first of all, they use a special kind of beef imported from the Liberty Steak Company in Philadelphia. It’s sliced thin, and heavily marbled with fat, which is a lot of the flavor. Benny Guadagni Junior is the chef here, taking the reins from his Dad a few months back and is continuing with the family tradition of cooking the real thing from Philadelphia.

FoodHe sautees that special meat in oil, and then makes the traditional recipe of sautéed onions, mushrooms, bell pepper and slices of mozzarella cheese. A little salt and pepper and you have a monument to Cheese Steak culture. All the flavors blend beautifully, steaming hot, and yes, greasy, but in a good way. A big sloppy sandwich that will set you back about six bucks. At Alex’s Brown Bag Deli, just the best Cheese Steak I’ve found in San Diego.
