DeSol: Even Joe the really-uptight-white-guy will dance to this band

If you missed the 102.1 KPRI Concert Cruise on Tuesday Night August 23, 2005 you missed what I will now forever call the "Bigger than LEGENDARY DeSol Experience". Let me explain.

A few months ago, a friend of mine who I’ll call him Bob for short, turned me on to a C.D. by a band out of Asbury Park, New Jersey. The band had just released a self-titled album. The band is named "DeSol" (Yes, I’m sure that’s not DEL Sol.)

He gave me the CD knowing that I might never get around to opening it up. And I almost didn’t.

Here’s a myth about being a music-show radio host and dj. (It’s a huge IRONY.) While I do spend most of my life hearing music, I’m just about like you when it comes to LISTENING to music. Usually, I’m so busy and running full speed with blinders on, that mentally shifting into listening mode is the hard part. And once I listen, I subconsciously categorize it. .

I’ve found when it comes to music, there is-

  • Music I WILL LIKE… that no one else will.
  • Music I WILL DISLIKE… that EVERYONE ELSE WILL LIKE
  • Music that EVERYONE will like… and
  • Music that is such an ACQUIRED TASTE, it either really sucks or the creators are such “bleeding-edge-musical-geniuses” that I can’t keep up with it sonically. (My appreciation of most RAP music and serious jazz falls into this category.) I dig the beats but they don’t dig me.

It's so awful but true… inside, I’m this character- "JOE...the really-uptight-white-guy."

Somehow, I found time to listen to this "DeSol" CD… And, at KPRI, we did everything we could to entice them to play for us on our yacht.

Finally, last night, WOW… and while this line isn’t as good as the famous Jon Landau, "I’ve seen the future of Rock and roll and his name is Bruce Springsteen. I will say that I’ll be damned if this isn’t a rock and roll band that can make JOE... the really-really-really uptight white guy ... dance.

Hanging out with Albie and Armando and the rest of the guys was a real pleasure. I see many musicians backstage and get to observe the chemistry and DeSol has a strong musical presence that left me feeling this is the best live band I’ve seen in years. The pure experience was electric.

DeSol opened for two groups at San Diego's House of Blues in August. And even though their next dates are in Nevada, Texas and Colorado during September and October, for other “JOES out there, if you want to impress someone with your knowledge of music and have a semi-religious musical experience at the same time, keep watch on the schedule at their web site and go and see them. They are truly one of the best bands I’ve ever seen.
