Barbarella Restaurant & Bar

Sometimes life isn’t all about eating, but being active and enjoying the sunny outdoors, especially here in San Diego where the weather is so perfect all the time. Therefore the great adventure is to do both and live the San Diego experience for all that its worth.

Another great thing about San Diego is you have the beautiful, beach village of La Jolla to the north, where Blacks Beach resides for the very brave and just south, plenty of ocean activities for fun seekers. We highly recommend ocean kayaking. You can rent them easily along the shoreline, ride single or double, join groups for an ocean tour or head out on your own excursion. On a beautiful day, with the sun beaming down on you and the warm ocean water lapping at your kayak, the word serene doesn’t even cover it.

But after two hours of rowing and splashing around in the water, it is definitely time to eat, and the options are numerous in the beach village. Still wearing somewhat wet swim clothes and with sand on our feet, we were still greeted and shown our tables without a flinch at Barbarella Restaurant & Bar. Sitting on the sidewalk patio is a delight, as you soak up the beach-goers and sounds of the strip.

We were there for lunch and quickly ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc that was fruity and smooth (a bottle is not out-of-the-question after exercising for two hours on the ocean). The menu contained a great assortment for lunch, offering soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and pizza – the perfect lunchtime, sunny day grub you can sink your teeth into (note that the dinner menu ups the ante with items such as Roasted Chicken, Prime Steak and several seafood dishes).

For starters we choose the Chino Corn & Cauliflower Soup and while I am not a cauliflower fan, the blend of herbs and spices left me wanting more, and Fritti (rock shrimp and haricot verts) which was also excellent in its flavor and nuance.

Since it was lunch and after feeling fulfilled with being so healthy with our morning kayak ride, we continued that trend and ordered salads instead of the very tempting burgers and pizzas. Quickly dispatched to us were the "Bib and Blue" salad (crisp butter lettuce, red wine vinaigrette, blue cheese) and the "Chino Chop Salad" (cherry tomatoes, celery, feta, toasted almonds, avocado lime dressing). Both were healthy, tasty and the perfect compliment for the day (you can add chicken or Salmon to any of the salads, as per your desire).

The majority of the meals were under $15.00 making Barbarella not only a culinary delight but also not one to stretch your pocketbook (which is really hard to do when they are still wet from the ocean. Bon apetit and enjoy!
