In the ever changing face of San Diego eateries, one stands out and has for the past few years, Café Chloe. Located on the northeast corner of Ninth Ave and G Street, this restaurant rarely disappoints. Billed as "Where the East Village meets Paris Chic," Café Chloe always elicits a smile and a "let’s go there" response from anyone who has ever been fortunate enough to enjoy the atmosphere and the wonderful selections.

We’ve lunched there several times, and will no doubt many times again. A casual elegance resonates from both the simplistic décor and the friendly, helpful staff. With only a few inside tables (maybe 10) and a matching number on the sidewalk patio, you’re sure to have an intimate and enjoyable experience, much as you would at any Parisian bistro.

We have many favorites at Café Chloe, but without a doubt, for lunch (or dinner) the macaroni, pancetta and gorgonzola gratin wins hands down. Recollection of the rich sauce, generous serving of pancetta, and sheer decadence of the dish makes us ravenous. Even when adhering to the strictest of diets…splurge. It’s worth an extra session on the treadmill. Make sure you order the sweet and delightful lavender lemonade served with a sprig of fresh lavender as an accompaniment.

The menu is not extensive, but just about everything Chef Katie Grebow creates is delicious. The steak tartine with gorgonzola mousse and cipollini onions is another favorite. Just to make sure to whet your appetite for this charming bistro, the mussels with saffron broth & pommes frites goes beautifully with the smoked trout & apple salad with fingerlings and almonds.

Café Chloe also has wonderful breakfasts with delights including a cured salmon gravlax crepe torte, or dinner favorites like lamb chops with Israeli couscous and roasted vegetables. All in all, this restaurant satisfies at every meal of the day. The wine list is also surprisingly comprehensive, and clearly constructed by someone who knows their vintages.

If you chose to enjoy a little alfresco dining, I recommend choosing a table on Ninth Avenue. The tables on G Street tend to be a little noisy. Also, make sure to bring plenty of change for the ravenous parking meters you’ll need to feed during your culinary experience.

On the way out, take a quick stroll through the small shop area featuring unusual gifts and gourmet groceries. Prices for any one dish rarely exceed $15, and you’ll leave with a fond memory, a desire to return, and a smile on your face. Cafe Chloe awaits, and hopefully will for many years to come
