A mere twenty minutes north of downtown San Diego, the beautiful city of La Jolla embraces the coast. Part beach town, part fashion show, part artistic enclave and all done with exquisite charm, La Jolla has much to offer. Most of all, it has a wonderful spectrum of restaurants and shining bright amongst them is Azul La Jolla.

Nestled in the bustling shopping district of Prospect Street, Azul’s canopy invites you to enter. Be sure to do so and allow yourself to be swept away with its sheer charm because the moment you cross the threshold you are in for something distinctive. Whether it’s the finely crafted woodwork, wine cellar and fireplace, the slated stone brick walls that greet you or the beautifully realized oval ceiling mural of an undersea water world sparkling with ocean life looking down at you from above. If that isn’t enough, Azul also rests spectacularly on a cliff overlooking the ocean, simply breathtaking. Know that you are in an establishment that offers you both comfort and incredible style.

We began the evening with a bottle of fabulous wine recommended by our server, Summer, who is on her way to becoming a sommelier and is Azul’s expert wine director. She selected a lovely 2003 French Syrah Paul Jaboulet Aines. The wine was spectacular, full bodied, with a subtle flavor and bouquet to prepare your pallet. The evening was off to a grand start.

Our first course of appetizers arrived in the form of Tempura Maryland soft-shell crabs (green apple slaw, smoked chile aioli, sweet Thai soy), served with three caviar blends of wasabi, yuzu, Japanese citrus and truffle, along with a Spanish tapas sampler (roasted garlic with assorted Mediterranean dips and spreads) served with crispini bread slices. The soft-shell crab was delicious with its moist consistency and crunchy exterior. Add the caviar and the dish was enchanting. The tapas were a delightful combination of the bread with enticing spreads of basil pesto, tapenade (kalmata olives), hummus and a red bell and chili pepper puree. A great way to introduce the taste buds to the pleasures that were to come.

Our second course of salads were a roasted beet & arugula salad (dry cocoa block jack, toasted pine nuts and cinnamon Harvard dressing) and mixed baby spring greens (toasted almonds, goat cheese and honey-balsamic vinaigrette). Both suited the desired palette cleansing as our entrée selections were being prepared.

Choosing a dish proved difficult with the many eclectic selections available. There are angus tenderloins, rare yellowfin ahi tuna, king salmon or muscovy duckling. We finally settled on the Lavendar mustard-crusted lamb loin medallions (cinnamon-honey carrot mash, English peas and hazelnut foam) and the Grilled double-cut Iowa pork chop (crispy sweet potato and spring onion salad with ginger-honey kumquats). There is not enough room in this review to use all the adjectives necessary to describe how spectacular the two dishes were. So let us just say, simply, delicious!

The lamb medallions were prepared at a perfect medium-rare, allowing the natural juices to deliver an amazing texture and luscious essence. One we will savor in memory for some time to come. Not to be outdone, the generous portion of the double-cut pork chop more than met the challenge. Sink into the slightly crusted exterior and let yourself melt into the awe inspiring taste of the tender meat. Resting on a bed of plantain mash, the mixture of sweet and seasoned flavors was enchanting. Finish off the meal with a delicacy (we went for the White Chocolate Cheesecake, with raspberry puree and pecans…..yeah, that did the trick) and the night was complete. The meals are the creative design of Executive Chef, Orion Balliet, who truly took us to the stars with his fine culinary artistry.

Azul La Jolla offers attractive sections for private functions, one even in their wine room, with elegant dark wood. The bar/lounge area that greets you as you enter the restaurant has a pink onyx top lit from below to settle your spirits on. Expect far more than peanuts here. There is also an outside seating area where you can lull in front of a fire for a spell, enjoy a beverage or two and partake of their satisfying tapas menu which offers over two dozen varieties.

Azul La Jolla truly has everything to offer for all of your desires. From an intimate dining experience to business or social functions; all done with tremendous style and flare. The service is impeccable, with the staff at your service for every whim. Rest assured your glass will always remain full while you are in their realm. Prices are on the higher end of the spectrum but rest assured that every penny is well spent and completely worth it. Enjoy!
