World Famous

Nothing speaks San Diego than strolling along the beach on a fine sunny day. A favorite setting of ours is a bike ride on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach. Add dining and drinks while people watching and it makes for a relaxing day. World Famous is the perfect establishment that fulfills the desire for a quick bite and cocktail or a long day of noshing and imbibing.

World Famous is all that you would expect at a beachfront diner. Its simple wide open space is filled with wooden tables and patio chairs that create the essence of life on the shore. Add a bit of skank factor (as any really good beach venue worth its weight should have) and you’ve got World Famous.

The venue is spacious with large windows looking out unto the boardwalk and the ocean beyond. By all means grab a window seat if you can. There is a fun, groovy looking bar that overlooks most of the room where cocktails a plenty can be had. The tables and chairs rock and creak, trying to find their groove and it merely adds to the charm.

We were thirsty from our bike ride and longed for a cocktail to quell that need. Our server quickly recommended the house favorite Absolutely Ruby Red (absolute grapefruit vodka over ice in a tall glass with California sparkling champagne cranberry and citrus juices). Our delight was exactly what the menu said, "Absolutely Delicious".

The menu itself was actually more eclectic than one might suspect. Delicacies like Roasted Red Pepper Bisque, Nut Crusted Brie and Big Island Ahi Poke tempted you as starters. There is a heavy dose of seafood elements to the dishes (hello, we are on the beach) but there are enough varied items to satiate anyone.

Kona Coast Shrimp Salad

We feasted on their Kona Coast Shrimp Salad (grilled, jumbo prawns over romaine tossed in a miso vinaigrette with wonton skins, mild local peppers & thinly sliced Bermuda onions). The salad arrived large and robust. While the dish was very enjoyable it was a little light on the prawns and a little heavy on the dressing. The flavor was very good and the could-have-used-more wonton skins made for a nice variance in texture.

We also savored the Beef & Veal Tortelacci (braised beef, veal and grana padano cheese wrapped in jumbo fresh egg tortelloni served over sautéed spinach with an elegant mushroom port butter sauce & crisp pancetta). Okay this entrée they hit it out of the park. The bold seasonings were immersed in the delicious thick, savory sauce. The tortelloni were oversized and stuffed with flavor. Combining each bite with the crisp pancetta delivered the goods in both flavor and textures.

World Famous brings you a striking balance between beach living and samplings of esoteric dining that makes for a quant experience. Prices are dead on affordable and the portions generous – a good bang for your buck. Add an amazing location right on the beach and a pleasant evening will be had by all. Enjoy!

The Good – a great affordable place to stop while strolling on the boardwalk.

The Bad – while pleasant, our server was more engaged with flirting at the table next to us than filling our beverage order.
