When Mara Martin moved back to her hometown of San Diego with her two kids, she discovered there were no little cute shops to buy everyday things for them. Having left the Los Angeles area, where children’s boutiques are everywhere, Martin and her husband had a hunch that a children’s boutique in La Jolla could thrive. They took the risk, and opened Posies and Ponies, and according to Martin the risk has paid off.

“Business is booming,” she says. Martin worked as the assistant director on the TV show Melrose Place for seven years. She says it was a wonderful experience and she’s still good friends with the crew.

The idea of a store was also sparked because Martin had gotten so much positive feedback on the tee shirts she’d been making for her two children. She started selling them online with great success, so, the next natural step was a brick-and-mortar business.

“My idea for the children’s store was to offer unique and affordable apparel," she says. "The other stores in LJ are fancy, this one is more every day and practical.”

Posies and Ponies is as charming as it is practical. Little areas around the store are set up comfortably for moms and kids. Martin has her grandfather’s Smith Corona typewriter displayed, a wooden train set and cars on low shelves—all perfect entertainment for little hands while parents shop.

Martin also sells toys and books—you won’t find any that are battery operated here, though. “I love retro. Kids have to use their imaginations,” says Martin. She’s very old school, offering Jacks and Bingo.

What Martin has discovered is that La Jollan’s really don’t want to go to the malls. “Moms come in here every day just to make sure I’m okay and that the store is doing well,” says Martin.

Her biggest seller is the line, Bla Bla Bla. It’s all hand-made in Peru. The dolls and mobiles are charming and have a personality all their own.

A local clothing line called Kipendo, made in Leukadia, is also huge.

Martin loves Under the Nile, an all organic-cotton line that she says is the most vibrantly colored of all the organic lines.

Of course she also sells her own exclusive Posies and Ponies tees that started the business off and a book selection that rivals any children’s bookstore.
