If you can find this place then you know you’re cool. It’s waaaay off the beaten track in an industrial warehouse complex in the middle of Mission Valley/Mission Gorge. But once you get there, you won’t be disappointed.

The Fresh Yard carries a trendy and very elite collection of hip, hot, skater, and designer-styled street wear, much of which can only be found here.

Owners Pete Nguyen, his brother Khoa, and friend Michael Martinez designed the store to look like a city playground. Stacked tires topped with a piece of glass stand as a display table, metal racks represent monkey bars, and the walls are covered in stylized graffiti.

Pete’s background is in beauty, working for Kerastase for many years; his brother Khoa is a recent San Diego State grad. The guys are DJs, artists, and musicians from San Francisco.

With its proximity to San Diego State University, the store’s success depends on the young select shopper looking to find the most unique clothing lines.

The owners plan on a different approach to marketing—using videos, photography and mix tapes to tell the world where they are—and once the right customer hits the door, Fresh Yard does have the goods to back it up.

Carrying lines like WeSC, a Swedish active skate brand for the “skater all grown up” and Naked & Famous, a Japanese salvage denim line are two of Fresh Yard’s exclusives.

Catering to local DJs, Fresh Yard carries a wide variety of upscale headphone lines and DJ equipment, like the Lady GAGA’s and the Dre beats. The hottest ear-bud line is by Minitio called the Tech 9’s—made from nine millimeter shell casings; heavy on the base of course.

Fresh Yard has the newest looks in shoes, hats, jewelry, sunglasses, and graphic tees.

One graphic tee line, Unscripted, is a collection of radical and politically charged designers that make sure that every tee displays only positive images, like a silkscreen of Dr. Martin Luther King in silhouette.

The shoe lines Gourmet, (started by three Italian guys who love food), Pro Ked, and Native, (which look like designer Crocs), are all kicks kids will have trouble finding anywhere else in San Diego.

So, you heard about here first, the underground spot for guys to find the newest in casual, going-out, upscale, and tailored street wear brought to you buy three guys who understand style and the culture that goes along with it.
