Dear old Mom. She’s the glue holding the family together. The chauffer, laundress, little league cheerleader, party planner, cook, chief bottle washer and boo-boo kisser. The one who puts you first and foremost merely because it’s what Moms do. So, fr’pete’sake doesn’t this emissary of unconditional love deserve reciprocal pampering on Mother’s Day? Yes, and here are a few suggestions of where to arrange a day of cosseting.

Rancho Valencia - An Auberge Resort The Spa at Rancho Valencia
5921 Valencia Circle Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067 (858) 756-1123
Every day is Mother’s Day at Rancho Valencia. High standards are the norm at this veteran resort, with the spa at the top of the list. An Auberge Head to Toe two hour treatment will belay the frenetic pace of life as an aesthetician manipulates Mom’s scalp, back and feet with a lavender and orange essence. Aquatic buffs gravitate to the Vichy Valencia exfoliating hydrotherapy shower followed with the Spring Quench back exfoliation and Shea Butter massage. A more Zen experience is the Watsu - Japanese for floating in a warm water pool while being massaged…ommm. (Casita rates start at $490 Mother’s Day weekend. The Auberge Head to Toe treatment $210 for 90 minutes, $275 for 120 minutes. Water Wellness $130 for 60 minutes. Spring Quench $100 for 60 minutes.)

W Hotel San Diego AWAY Spa
421 West B Street San Diego, CA 92101 (619) 398-3100
Refueling and rejuvenating is AWAY’s motto. Tap into the fountain of youth with anti-aging facials such as Melt Away, which includes a resurfacing glycolic and salicylic application. Their REN skincare contains bioactive free of synthetics and preservatives. Has Mom had a bit too much bubbly? The “Rehabs” cold stone massage will shake a hangover; an eye treatment will make bags disappear. Duel pampering is what the WoW treatment provides, as two therapists give a massage and facial simultaneously! Wow! Makes a one technician service seem mundane. (Room rates start at $201 Mother’s Day weekend. Melt Away facial $175 for 80 minutes. Rehab $155 for 80 minutes. WoW treatment $195 for 80 minutes.)

Best Western Plus Inn by the Sea SK Sanctuary of La Jolla

A preferred room with balcony and partial ocean view, complimentary continental breakfast, USA Today newspaper, and a choice of the European facial or European massage at nearby SK Sanctuary sum up Mom’s special weekend. Transportation to and from the spa one mile away will be arranged by SK. Once there, specific skin care needs are addressed, determining what exfoliating peels, botanical extracts and masques are best for a facial. The massage is a bit less involved, necessitating only a strong set of nimble fingers to knead life’s tension away. (Room rates start at $139 Mother’s Day weekend. Spa Package is $229 a night, including the treatment.)
