Chargers Linebackers Play Dodge Ball June 10

Gather a team, throw on a wacky costume, and get prepared to find your inner child as you duck, dive and dodge flying balls at the Party Like An All-Star: Rock Star Dodge Ball event. It will be an evening of fun hosted by Charger linebackers Stephen Cooper and Shaun Phillips at the Hard Rock Hotel this Friday night.

Even if it has been years since you last played dodgeball or you simply lack athletic ability, it is still possible to join in on the fun. All you need to get involved in the action is a little enthusiasm and the desire to raise money for After School All-Stars (ASAS).

“After School All-Stars is the after-school program that caters to underprivileged children,” Phillips said on a YouTube video. “It is a place for kids to go after school. They have peer mentorships, a place to study and play sports.”

Founded by Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1992, the ASAS program provides academic enrichment and sports-based programming to more than 3,700 children annually in San Diego. Eighty percent of the students served qualify for federal free or reduced-price lunches.

Held between the hours of 3 and 6 p.m., ASAS bridges the gap between the time children are out of school and parents get off work. This time period of the day is particularly challenging. Nationally, there are over 15 million latch-key children who are unsupervised after school. These students are more likely to engage in violent crime, drug use, alcohol, and sexual activity than their peers who have adult supervision during this time period.

According to the ASAS website, children who participate in the program show marked improvement in GPA, test scores, and school attendance. They also were more likely to attend college and ultimately earn a higher paying job.

The cost of providing services to participating children for free is approximately $1,500 per child per year. The Party Like An All-Star: Rock Star Dodge Ball event is expected to attract nearly 700 competitors and raise close to $75,000 to support ASAS academic programs.

“Dodgeball is the perfect kid game to give back to the perfect kid charity,” Phillips said.

This event is also meant to be fun. Each team is strongly encouraged, but not required, to play in themed costumes of their choice.

Five-player teams will compete in a single elimination tournament with each team guaranteed to play in at least two games. The winning team will receive serious bragging rights and a cash prize of $500.

The entrance fee is $450 per team and includes heavy appetizers, a specialty drink, and an opportunity to win great prizes.

For $750, your team can choose the VIP Red Carpet Reception experience that includes a hosted bar and an early 5:30 entrance to mix and mingle with athletes and celebrities. There will also be an opportunity to have your photo taken with some of the ASAS's Celebrity Ambassadors, including host Shaun Phillips.

Team check in is at 6 p.m. with the action starting at 6:45 p.m. For those that just wish to watch the festivities, general admission tickets are available for $35.
