The most convenient airport—and the largest—that serves downtown San Diego is the San Diego International Airport (SAN). There, you will find three terminals. The Commuter Terminal serves flights to and from Los Angeles by carriers American Eagle, Delta Connection, SkyWest and United Express. Terminal 1 is home to Alaska, Southwest and United Airlines. Terminal 2 is the main terminal and serves more tan a dozen airlines, including all international flights. 3225 North Harbor Drive, San Diego, California 92101, (619) 400-2404

Visitors from Los Angeles that are visiting Carlsbad and North San Diego County may want to use the Palomar Airport (CLD), located three miles outside Carlsbad. There are multiple daily flights to and from Los Angeles, operated by United Express/SkyWest. This airport is also convenient for private or chartered flights. 2192 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad, CA 92011, USA, (760) 431-4646

If you’re traveling from San Diego to a Mexico or Latin American destination, consider flying out of Rodriguez Tijuana Airport (TIJ) instead. The airlines include Volaris, Viva Aerobus, Aeromexico and Interjet, and many times fares are cheaper than flying an American airline. Plus, there are many more flight times and Latin American cities served than from the San Diego airport. There are shuttles that leave from San Diego and take passengers directly to the Tijuana airport for approximately $15 round-trip. Call Tijuana Transportation Service at (619) 459-3227 or Mexicoach at (619) 232-5049 for more information or to reserve a space. Another option is to park in Otay Mesa and take a taxi across the border to the airport, which sits just across the street from the border fence in Otay Mesa. There are currently plans to build a pedestrian bridge that will lead directly to the airport from Otay Mesa, making it even easier for Americans to use the Tijuana Airport. If you’re planning on renting a car or taking an extended trip through Southern California, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a viable option for travel. The Los Angeles airport is located two to three hours from downtown San Diego, depending on traffic. One of the largest airports in the world, LAX has daily flights by multiple carriers and is sure to serve your city of origin or destination. 1 World Way, Los Angeles, CA 90045, (310)646-5252
