Mission Beach Information

Mission Beach

Mission Beach in San Diego is nestled on a sandbar between the Pacific Ocean and Mission Bay. The San Diego beach is the ideal spot to soak up the sun on the sand or ride the waves with your surfboard or boogie board. There are numerous water sport rental shops located at the beach as well as surf lessons offered for those just getting their feet wet. San Diego Mission Beach has separate designated swimmer and surfer zones as well. There is also a boardwalk that runs parallel to the water, which is perfect for jogging, skateboarding, rollerblading or bike riding with the sea breeze blowing in your hair. San Diego Mission Beach provides a convenient location for a day trip, but it also offers plenty of activities, sites and San Diego hotels for visitors looking for extended stays.

Mission Beach is well known for its beachfront amusement park Belmont Park. San Diego Mission Beach Belmont Park is home to the famous Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, which was originally built in 1925, but has since been restored. The coaster with a 73-foot drop is one of two original beachfront roller coasters still operating on the West Coast today. Belmont Park also features other rides such as bumper cars, the tilt-a-whirl, carousel and more. In addition, the Mission Beach San Diego theme park presents an arcade, games, laser tag, shops and restaurants providing entertainment for the whole family.

The Wave House at San Diego Mission Beach is also a must-see location while visiting this San Diego beach. Although the Wave House has four restaurants in addition to bars, a concert venue and even a 50-meter pool, the real attractions are the Flowrider and the FlowBarrel wave machines. The Flowrider is an artificial wave where guests of all ages can flow-board standing up or take to their bellies body-boarding. The FlowBarrel is the monster wave machine, which creates a perfectly barrelled 10-foot wave to ride with 100,000 gallons of water pumping into it each minute. Known as Bruticus Maximus, the FlowBarrel invites brave souls to flow-board the curling wave.

  • Parking: Free parking is available at West Mission Bay Drive and Mission Boulevard across the street from Belmont Park. Street parking is also available along Mission Boulevard.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol is not permitted on the beach nor on the boardwalk.
  • Beach Fires: Fires are only allowed in the fire pits provided by the city. All flames in fire pits must be extinguished between midnight and 5am.
