Ocean Beach Information

Ocean Beach in San Diego is a low key beach community filled with flair and personality. Commonly referred to as OB, the beach town has several landmark attractions including the pier and the tide-pools. The Ocean Beach Pier reaching 1,971 feet into the ocean is the longest concrete pier on the West Coast. The pier, originally created as a fishing spot, is the ideal place to cast a line into the sea or watch the sunset over the water. The tide-pools in San Diego Ocean Beach are located under the pier and are best if visited at low tide. Here, visitors can spot sea life such as fish, crabs and sea anemones. San Diego Ocean Beach presents a beach town perfect for spending the day relaxing and playing on the beach and then exploring the local bars and music venues by night.

Running perpendicular to the San Diego Beach, Newport Avenue is the main strip in Ocean Beach, which is lined with locally owned boutiques, bars and restaurants. Visitors can enjoy Reggae performances every Thursday night at Gallagher's Irish Pub while every Wednesday from 4pm to 8pm the farmer's market sets up on the avenue offering visitors a great way to support the local businesses. Visitors and locals can shop the community vendors, sampling fresh produce and browsing the artwork. Newport Avenue in San Diego Ocean Beach is also the location of the very first Hodad's burger establishment, which was voted as one of CNN's top five best burger joints in the country.

San Diego Ocean Beach features a place for everyone be it sun worshippers, swimmers, surfers or even dogs. The stretch of beach has plenty of sand to provide spots to lay out and picnic, while there are also volleyball courts and fire pits open to the public. There are swimming areas, but also surf only areas in the water, where surfers can ride the waves without worrying about bumping into swimmers. The San Diego Beach is also home to the original Dog Beach, which is one of the first official off-leash dog beaches in the United States. Located at the mouth of the San Diego River where it meets the Pacific Ocean, San Diego Ocean Beach Dog Beach is a safe place where your furry friends are free to roam the sandy beach and swim in the water without the pesky restrictions of their leashes.

  • Pier: Ocean Beach Pier is the longest concrete pier on the West Coast.
  • Parking: Ocean Beach Pier has free public parking lots located at Dog Beach and at the end of Voltaire Street. Street parking is also available.
  • Dogs: Dogs are allowed without leashes on Dog Beach, but seasonal leash restrictions apply on the rest of the Ocean Beach.
