As a U.S. service member, you literally signed up to put your life on the line for your country. To show thanks, many businesses offer cost-savings, whether it's a discount on your purchase or a free meal on Veterans Day.

You can find Veterans Day discounts in many different categories from travel and recreation to restaurants and retail shops that all want to show their appreciation for your service. Some businesses advertise this discount upfront, while others are more discreet about their offerings. If you're unclear about whether a company offers one or what the actual discount or deal is, feel free to ask for clarification.
FAQ

Q1. Will I need to prove my veteran status?

Answer: Most places do require proof of service, whether you're active, reserve, or a veteran. Your military ID card should suffice, however, a VA benefits ID card with your photo will often work as well. Contact the discount provider to verify their requirements.

Q2. When are the Veterans Day discounts available?

Answer: Most businesses, offer the discount or deal on the actual day, which is November 11. Sometimes, however, the benefit may extend for the week or entire month. If the date isn't clarified on the website or in the place of business, you can ask for clarification.

Q3. Should I still tip if I receive a free meal?

Answer: Yes. It's a good idea to tip as you would if you were paying full price for the meal, whether it's discounted or free.

Q4. Is there a limit to the discounts or deals I can take advantage of?

Answer: The answer to this question varies. Most establishments will only allow for the discount to be used on one occasion. Some retailers, like Target, allow for additional purchases if you sign up using their special programs. As far as the number of establishments you can frequent to use your yearly deal or discount, the answer is no. If you can make it to the business or shop online, you can take advantage of the deals offered by several companies.
