San Diego ExperienceMark Twain in San Diego
Actor Tennessee Webb
On a recent evening in April in Old Town San Diego, Mark Twain dusted off his white suit and addressed the diners in attendance at a cigar dinner presented by Churchill's Cigar Lounge. The group was seated on the patio at Jack & Giulios Italian restaurant. the restarant and the cigar lounge are within a block of each other on San Diego avenue in Old Town.

Holding forth on everything from his once failed run for Governor to his wonderment at cel phones, Mr. Twain spoke in impromptu style for nearly 20 minutes. In fact, Mark Twain aka Samuel Clemens, author of the American classic Huckleberry Finn, was being channeled by one Tennessee Webb. Mr. Webb knows a great deal about the life of his muse, Mark Twain. He produced and directed a one man show as Twain at the Spreckels Theater here in San Diego in 2004. He presented a second version of the show in Miami last year at Cinematheque and will reprise the role this August at a theater in Los Angeles. According to Webb, Twain even has a connection to San Diego. While Twain was widely traveled and wrote humorous travelogues of his trips, he never actually visited San Diego. Twain and General Ulysses S. Grant were dining and cigar smoking partners. Through Grant, Twain broke a 7 year writing block that had prevented him from completing the famous novel about fictional Finn. Grant's son, for whom the US Grant Hotel downtown is named, is buried here in San Diego. With a degree in International Law and a practice that followed, Tennessee's love for acting led him into theater and film both as actor and producer. For more information about Webb's future appearances, keep tabs on www.tennesseewebb.com that will have his profile and performance schedule in the next few months.

Ron Collins May 11, 2007When I had the pleasure to watch Tennessee Webb perform the role of Mark Twain, it reminded me of a famous quote of Spencer Tracy, which is "Never let them catch you acting". I was convinced Mr. Webb was Mark Twain. It was a truly entertaining piece of art.

Alice Carroll May 15, 2007When I went to see Tennessee Webb perform I felt as though time travel really is possible. Never once did I feel as though I were watching an actor, Mark Twain was with us that night. Highly recommend the experience to all.
Well done Tennessee and hope to have the opportunity to travel back in time with you again. Alice Hollywood, FL
Joan Craig May 18, 2007I have had the great pleasure of witnessing the fabulous
performance of Tennessee's "Twain in the 21st Century" in Florida and cannot wait for his performances in Los Angeles, where I first met him, at the Beverly Hills Hotel's beautiful Polo Lounge Garden, enchanting everyone who approached him as he actually has a stunning appearance and naturally looks like Mark Twain. He is a supreme artist, raconteur and a genuinely endearing and humourous man. I will be in the audience most nights, as each performance is different and delightful as he involves the audience. We need more evenings this exciting and inspiring.
nancy hedtke May 19, 2007I have had the pleasure of knowing Tennessee on a personal level as well as being part of his Mark Twain audience. It is very clear to me that Tennessee channels Mark Twain. There is no "practicing" a role. His body, soul and mind are Mark Twain. In everyday conversations I sometimes have had to step back in awe, as I witness the marvel of channeling.
s.gottlieb May 20, 2007Although I have only seen Mr. Webb's performances on video, I am in awe of the way he captures the essence of Mark Twain. It is a total mind, body and soul connection, that reverberates through the generations, and brings Twain to life in 2007. It's great to know that one of the greatest writers of all times is not only memorialized through Mr. Webb's performances, but that he is alive and well and enlightening us with his humour and his insights.
I love the way in which Webb interacts with the audience . These spontaneous moments are priceless! I'm looking forward to experiencing Webb's Twain in person in the very near future!
Margaret Butler May 21, 2007With the ease of a Master and the brilliance of a genius you,Tennessee Webb, have brought Mark Twain to life in the 21st century. It is obvious that the stage is your home, the audience your family, and their applause & laughter the food for your soul.Channeling Twain is no accident for you Mr.Webb, nor does it appear to be a challenge. Most everything that brings a laugh also brings a message.I would guess that like Twain you are very much the visionary. The world needs to hear much more from Tennessee Webb's Mark Twain.
J Edwards June 20, 2007In a word, Outstanding!
Remember Tennessee Webb, as he's the real deal. He took us on a wonderful trip back in time and when we returned, we wanted to go back. His show was so enjoyable that a Broadway Play couldn?t have been better, unless of course it was Mr. Tennessee Webb?s show. The good Ole days have been represented well by Mr. Tennessee Webb and if you ever have an opportunity to see his show, get a front row seat. Thank you Mr. Webb (Mark Twain) for the outstanding performance and fond memories. And thanks to folks at the Churchill Cigar Lounge for making all of this come together. What a great mix of food, wine, cigars and a fantastic group of people. I hope there will be another show like this some time again. I know my review is late but, WOW! What a show! |
