Writers for SanDiego.com scored eleven awards in six categories, including a sweep of dining reviews and First and Third in three more of the 34 web site/daily newspaper categories. More than 370 San Diego journalists attended the 36th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards on October 20, 2009, at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.

The San Diego Press Club-sponsored event honored this year's recipients for outstanding journalistic achievements in print, web and broadcast media for work published between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009. The awards are "juried" by other press clubs around the country, so the focus is on the quality of the journalism separate from local politics or personal connections.

"It's great to see the hard work our writers put in every week get recognized," said Mark Burgess, SanDiego.com publisher.

Special honorees included City News Service San Diego Bureau Chief Kelly Wheeler, Newsweek correspondent Jamie Reno and former SDSU professor Glenn Broom. All award winners received plaques and certificates for their celebrated efforts.

During the evening, attendees sampled a delicious array of cuisine from 22 of San Diego's top restaurants, including Humphrey's, JSix, The Oceanaire, and The Marine Room; assorted wines from the Temecula Valley Winegrower's Association; beer from Karl Strauss Brewery Company; and Nika water. Silent auction winners took home generous prizes from local sponsors with proceeds supporting future San Diego Press Club endeavors.

The San Diego Press Club has nearly 400 members in the news communications field. Offering a blend of social and professional growth activities, they seek to foster a community where the relevant professional/social needs of news communications professionals can be met in an environment of integrity and high ethical standards. On their web site, they cite dedication to: "promoting social enjoyment, cultivating professional advancement, encouraging friendly communication, providing all the advantages of a professional club and fostering the ethical standards of professional journalism."
