What:
Another Fleet favorite, Astronomy Day, returns in May! Explore the cosmos in an afternoon with engaging hands-on activities led by our science educators. Shrink the solar system down to a pinhead scale and embark on our yearly ½ mi. trek across Balboa Park during our guided “Walk Through the Solar System” tour. See an artful interpretation of pinhead planets and hear amazing facts about our planetary neighbors along the way!
Then, join us in the Lecture Hall at 2 p.m. for a Fleet first – a Live Interactive Virtual Exploration (LIVE) of Palomar Observatory. Broadcasting from over 60 miles away at Palomar Mountain, Scott Kardel will lead the Fleet audience on an interactive virtual tour of the 200 inch Hale telescope. Learn what new and exciting science is taking place at Palomar and ask your own questions in this unique tour.
At 3 p.m. our event sponsors, Astronomy Magazine and Meade Instruments Corp. will provide a chance to win 3 free annual subscriptions to Astronomy Magazine and two telescopes—an ETX-80 and an 8-inch LX-90! Plus our friends from the San Diego Astronomy Association will set up telescopes outdoors and conduct public outreach all day. Sun gaze safely, learn about current telescope equipment and pick up great observing tips! Don’t miss all the fun—the time will fly by faster than a near-Earth asteroid.
Astronomy Day events happening inside the Fleet are included with admission. The outdoor “Walk Through the Solar System” guided tour is free.
