The San Diego Boat Show proved once again that boating is big business in San Diego. The 4-day event, (Thursday, January 4th through Sunday, January 7th) at the San Diego Convention Center, showcased everything from luxury yachts to kayaks. For aficionados, there was state-of-the-art marine electronics and high-tech fishing and diving gear on display.

Due to it’s popularity and dealer demand, the San Diego Boat Show was expanded by 25% this year, bringing the total number of boats and yachts for everyone to enjoy to over 500! More that 29,000 people from all over San Diego & Orange Counties, Los Angeles, Nevada and Arizona, attended the preview of “marine toys” that will be out on the water this coming summer.

New feature exhibits this year were the “Splash Dogs” and the ‘Take Me Fishing Tour.” “Splash Dogs” showcased real-life diving dogs that broad jump from a dock into a pool. The owners of the Splash Dogs exhibit donated half of the registration fees to the “Semper Fi Fund” - which helps wounded/injured marines and their families. The ‘Take Me Fishing Tour” included fighting fish simulators, a live aquarium, a casting pond, information stations, and entertainment and fishing seminars.

Outside the convention center at the Marriott Marina, families took free sailboat rides on the bay, and tours of boats & luxury yachts.

Annual features include free boating and sailing lessons, the Port of San Diego-sponsored interactive Big Bay Kids Area, informational seminars, manufacturers, dealers, finance and insurance specialists and numerous topics on boating. As always, there was live music, and of course, ample boats for attendees to climb aboard and explore.
