San Diego Zoo Asking For Public Input On Panda Cub's Name

Last Updated: Tue, Oct 2nd, 2007

The San Diego Zoo is asking for help naming their newest panda cub. In keeping with Chinese tradition the cub won't be named until she's a hundred days old. The cub was born in August. Zoo visitors will be able to leave suggestions starting later this week. The cub is the fourth giant panda born at the zoo, all of them to 16-year-old Bai Yun. The father, Gao Gao, also fathered her two previous cubs. Following Chinese tradition, the panda cub will receive a name after she is 100 days old. Only about 1,600 giant pandas remain in the wild, and fewer than 180 live in captivity.
