Cafe Coyote lives up to their name as San Diego's Best Mexican Restaurant!

Location

Cafe Coyote
San Diego
United States

Located in the heart of the Old Town Walking District, the traditional cuisine at Cafe Coyote has customers beaming from ear to ear. Here, foodies are transported to rustic Mexico without having to cross the border. Apart from the mouth-wateringly delicious food, the restaurant's friendly staff, prime location, and festive atmosphere have led to Cafe Coyote being voted San Diego's Best Mexican Restaurant for the past eight out of nine years- a title that they definitely uphold in style. While dining and drinking, guests are given a live mariachi performance in the colorful and lush outdoor courtyard. The ambient atmosphere is strengthened by the Spanish architecture, Mexican murals, gushing fountains, and cultural decoration throughout the restaurant.

The establishment is not only a restaurant, but also a highly-respected cantina. In fact, Cafe Coyote has been acclaimed by the Academia del Tequilia of Mexico City as a certified tequila house- one of only two in the entire United States. As such, the management have deemed it fit to employ official tequila ambassadors, who make knowledgeable recommendations and assist guests with their selection based on food pairing, price, and taste preferences. Additionally, the seasoned bartenders can whip up any margarita imaginable and, with over 100 fiery tequilas to choose from, customers will never run out of fun, creative beverage options.

While the drinking experience is something to be talked about, the food at Cafe Coyote is what makes the world of Mexican cuisine go 'round. While waiting (and sipping one of those tasty margaritas that's as large as a human head), patrons can enjoy watching traditionally-clad ladies make fresh tortillas to accompany their meal. These tortillas are made the traditional "a mano" (by hand) way and exude the TLC that was put into making them. The menu is loaded with traditional food made from authentic ingredients from start to finish, appetizer to dessert, complete with plentiful dishes that can easily be transformed into vegetarian options. Mexican chefs utilize regional recipes from across the country to bring bright and bold flavors for customers to savor. Start off with a soup, salad, or one of the many flaming appetizers before delving into the world of taco platters, surf and turf, and a la carte dishes. A more traditional section of the menu also offers classic burritos, enchiladas, tamales, and combination specials. In order to make the experience that much more memorable, the staff at Cafe Coyote update a monthly recipe corner on the restaurant's website, giving step-by-step instructions for amateur chefs who want to have a go at recreating authentic dishes. An archive lists recipes for all of the specials dating back several months. Clearly, they are so confident in the work of their chefs that they aren't afraid to share the love.

This Old Town hotspot isn't just a popular weekend destination either. Cafe Coyote offers daily discounts, such as happy hour and sport viewing events, to help locals beat the work week blues. The happy hour consists of reduced cocktail and draft beer prices, taco deals, and specialty shots.

Cafe Coyote can also cater to large groups for private fiestas with its banquet menus, which come with various combinations of appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks at a spectacular bargain price. The special menus created with specific holidays in mind are also extensive and include feature cocktails, domestic beer, and entree combinations that are perfect for the family to share.

From the moment of happy-go-lucky entry to the restaurant to the unavoidably bittersweet departure, Cafe Coyote fosters a good time for all. After dining, the esplanade is the perfect place to walk off the belly full of Mexican heaven. Several shops and attractions, such as Little Adobe Chapel, Old Town Cemetery, and Old Town State Park, sit just across the way. If one absolutely has to leave, at least the exit opens up a whole range of Old Town activities. One thing's for sure: with so many options under one roof, it's no surprise that Cafe Coyote is rated the best, and they don't seem to be planning on giving up that title any time soon.
