On Monday evening, Nov 2, hundreds of San Diegans packed Kearny Mesa Bowl in support of San Diego Chargers Quentin Jammer and Jacques Cesaire’s “J Bowl,” a celebrity bowling and silent auction event to raise funds for the Jammer Family Foundation and the Pro Player Foundation..

A large reason for the success of the event was the support it received from Xtra Sports 1360 AM in marketing it to San Diego’s sports fans. Jammer was elated by the turnout. He said, “It’s great all these people are here to support me and Jacques. It is good to know that all these people have our backs.” In addition to the fans, several Charger players were present to provide the celebrity element of the event. Jammer commented, “To have my teammates come down to support me, it shows that we are all basically brothers. That is what I really appreciate.”

In June 2007, Jammer and his wife Alicia formed the Jammer Family Foundation. The mission statement of the foundation states, “To provide encouragement for disadvantaged youth who have limited resources to develop their educational and professional goals.”

Jammer believes, “If I can make a difference in the life of one child myself, I know I will have truly succeeded.” By associating his foundation with the San Pasqual Academy, Jammer has already succeeded many times over. This is success that has a profound residual impact on both disadvantaged children and the community of San Diego as a whole.

According to Debby Syverson, San Pasqual’s Development Liaison, “San Pasqual Academy is a four-year residential high school for foster teens and it is the first of its kind the nation. Nothing like this has been done before.” The academy is the dream of Jim Milliken, a retired Superior Court Judge. Milliken believes, “The primary factor that makes San Pasqual special is, is that it is a place where the kids know that they can stay for their entire high school experience.”

Principal Tom Allison is very appreciative of Jammer because not only does he support the academy financially, he is also very giving of his time. In speaking of Jammer, Allison said, “It is really wonderful when we can have a recognizable outside voice that represents high integrity and high character to come and share with our kids.”

Despite the praise, Jammer believes he is the one that is on the receiving end. “I feel more rewarded that San Pasqual blessed me with an opportunity to help them. I am just honored to be part of the San Pasqual Academy.”

Having fun at J Bowl was Tim Reese and Frankie Lopez who received free tickets the event as members of Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County. Reese finds it fun and very rewarding mentoring Frankie in a special sports edition of Big Brother and Big Sisters. Together they have gone to several sporting events including Chargers games, The Poinsettia Bowl, USD games and have participated in a variety of sports clinics. For Frankie his reasons for being there were, “To bowl, have fun and eat!”

In addition to helping raise funds for San Pasqual Academy, Jacques Cesaire’s participation in J Bowl raised funds for Darren Bennett’s Pro Player Foundation. Bennett who’s son William has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (MD), started the foundation with former Chargers kickers John Carney and Steve Christie. The mission is, “To seek out and assist cutting edge research that will not only lead to a cure for MD but many other genetic diseases.”

Bennett likely will be named as one of the 50 Greatest Chargers later this month at the Chargers 50th Anniversary Block Party. He is thankful for the efforts of both Cesaire and Jammer. Bennett said, “It is great to see these guys get some of the credit that is due. There are always those guys that quietly do things in the community that a lot of people don’t know about.”

Like Jammer, Cesaire was not concerned about the credit and was just happy to have the opportunity to hang out and interact with so many Chargers fans. “It is always special. I like it for the fans to realize, we are human too. We are just like them, just a little bigger and stronger. We are good guys and we like to have a lot of fun!”
