“The San Diego Sockers have leaned on their reputation as 10-time indoor champions for a long time. The truth is, they haven’t won a title since 1992,” according to PASL Pro weekly. Well, after the first two weeks of play, the truth is the San Diego Sockers look a lot more like a defending champion than an expansion team of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL).

Perhaps the Sockers have conjured up the Ghost of Christmas Past or Paul Wright at age 40, currently leading the league in scoring, has truly found the fountain of youth. Whatever it is, it appears the Sockers have tapped into something magical as they have started the season impressively at 4-0, the only undefeated PASL team.

This fast start includes road wins against the Denver Dynamite and the Texas Outlaws and a two game sweep of their first homestand. On Friday, November 20, the Sockers defeated the PASL defending champions, the California Cougars, 5-4 in overtime. Then on Saturday night the Sockers destroyed the Las Vegas Knights 15-2.

Against the Knights, Wright scored the third Sockers goal of the game, just seven seconds into the second quarter. The play was reminiscent of the fastest goal (click to see goal) ever scored in indoor soccer history, which was also scored by Wright.

Also against the Knights, Kraig Chiles and Anthony Medina both earned hat tricks with 3 goals each.

After the game Chiles was asked if the Sockers are really this good. “I believe so. I think we have serious mixture of veterans and young kids . . . I think we are looking good for this season.”

Even with the fast start the Sockers are not taking anything for granted and are looking for ways to improve. Medina believes the Sockers can improve by playing a more complete game. “At times we lapse, we play three good quarters and one not so good. I think if we play three and half to four quarters of our style of soccer that will take us where we want to be.”

You can see for yourself if the Sockers are where they want to be at their next home game against their rivals the Denver Dynamite on Saturday, December 5, 6:15 P.M. at the new Del Mar Arena.

You can also see the Sockers on television by watching a replay of their thrilling victory against the California Cougars on Cox’s Channel 4 SD, Saturday, November 28 at 3:00 P.M.
