Beach Burgers with Basted Buns
The good old all American hamburger captures the imagination and fires up the emotions of the average diner. And judging from the burger they serve at Hodad's, it's easy to see why. This Ocean Beach surfer diner has been churning out outstanding burgers for decades. Towering with meat and vegies, dripping with flavor, this monument to burger science is one of the best burgers I've ever eaten.
One of their secrets is that they baste the buns with mayonaise, then grill it up. Another twist is that they use bacon bits, and edges, and fry a mass of it into sort of a second meat patty.
This is the Bacon Cheeseburger with grilled onion. By itself it's $5.25, or add a buck for fries. You have to have a large grip to down this bad boy, but it's worth the effort. Dripping with flavor, oozing with juice, this is not just one of the prettiest burgers in town, but also one of the best.
