Asian Super Store
Are you short on fish sauce? Missing some Kim Chee in your pantry? How about a live trout, green lipped mussels, and Dungeness crab, so fresh you might get pinched?
Even marinated chicken feet are no problem at this store. In fact, no matter what you need in the classic Asian food arena, 99 Ranch probably has it in ten versions. This import from the Los Angeles area moved to San Diego eight years ago, bringing in a Supermarket experience about as removed from conventional food market as you can get.
Huge saltwater tanks hold crawling crabs, lobsters, and so many swimming fish you might think you’re at Sea World for a split second.
This place is more than a market, but an entertainment experience. Mrs. Eater often says it’s like a trip to Disneyland for her. And even the produce has that Asian flair here. The spikey Duran is a dessert fruit, with an almost cookie dough texture and flavor. Giant radishes and some veggies I have not a clue about line the walls. And if you want to try Asian dishes without the fuss, check out the four restaurants in the Ranch 99 building.
One has these whole Peking ducks hanging in a row, while another is a classic Chinese buffet, with a variety of vegetable, meat and seafood with some pretty good flavors for warming tray food. With stuffed pork buns and a variety of chow mai or dim sum appetizers, you can get an exotic lunch here for less than five bucks. And all the splendor of 99 Ranch is thrown in for free.
