Who would ever think having squishy, rubbery balls the size of large peas added to flavored drinks would be edible, much less a craze?
Well, boba is indeed taking California by storm, with boba Bars like the Tapioca Express in Kearny Mesa popping up like Boba Balls over the landscape.
Boba balls are made of Tapioca, which comes from the Casava root grown in Asia. Boba is the pellet form of the substance, formed by forcing tapioca through sieves. The balls have brown sugar added, and have a lightly sweet, chewey taste that frankly, I've grown to like a lot.
The drinks at the Tapioca Express range from tea and coffee based, to ices, snow bubbles (kind of a fruit icy)to milk bases drinks flavored with fruit. They range from two to three bucks, come with a giant straw so all those boba can work their way up unobstructed, and I have yet to hit a bad flavor. My favorites are the fruit icy's, with strawberry a standout, and the coffee drinks are delicious. But no matter what you try, you know you're on the cutting edge of Boba science.
