Tower 23: JRDN Restaurant

If you’re looking for the perfect afternoon lunch in San Diego, look no further, you’ve found it. Located in Pacific Beach a mere 50 yards north of Crystal Pier, JRDN (pronounced Jordan), the indoor/outdoor restaurant at hotel Tower 23 is sure to please. The hotel, which boasts numerous awards for architecture, service and food, sits directly in front of the Pacific Ocean, separated only by the boardwalk. People watching is as enjoyable as the lunch with throngs of surfers, joggers, and bronzed beach goers lolling by under a very pleasant afternoon sun.
JRDN’s wine list is not extensive, but the variety of selections has something for everyone. My lunch partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the crisp Swanson Pinot Grigio, which is available by the glass ($8.50) or by the bottle ($32.00). There are two menus, one for the sushi bar, and one for the kitchen. We started with a flavorful Ahi and Octopus salad with a soy dressing ($9.00), and soft shell crab hand rolls ($9.00). Both were excellent, although the octopus is very finely chopped and almost undetectable by sight. The soft shell crab is lightly deep fried, and accompanied by fresh vegetables and sticky rice in a cone shaped sheet of seaweed. Use lots of wasabi in your soy sauce for an extra special kick! We also sampled the Miso soup ($4.50), which was a bit bland. Our main courses were spectacular, and I highly recommend the Lobster BLT on toasted brioche with a tarragon aioli ($12.00). My partner raved about the Tower 23 burger with white cheddar, which was grilled perfectly to a juicy pink ($9.00). Also on the menu and not to be missed are the JRDN crab cake benedict ($13.00), the seafood cobb salad ($12.00) and the brioche French toast stuffed with ricotta cheese and blueberry cream ($8.00). If that sounds a little like breakfast, it’s from the "start me up" menu, but all entrees are available throughout day.
All in all, if I had to choose my favorite oceanfront setting with attentive service, interesting scenery, and three hours of free underground parking, Tower 23’s JRDN is the place. It’s not inexpensive, and it may be a bit much for the kids, but you’ll never forget your day enjoying fine food, good wine as the world slowly passes in front of you. Enjoy!
