Looking for a great meal after spending a day at the beach in La Jolla? Find your way to Piatti Ristorante for lunch or dinner. Merely two blocks away from crashing waves and bronzed bodies soaking up the sun, the moment you enter the lobby you are charmed by a tranquil, darkened establishment that knows just how to make you feel special.

Take a few extra steps and request the outside courtyard. There stands a large, centrally situated majestic tree with branches and overflowing leaves practically reaching out to greet you. The area is bordered by an eight foot wall which continues to create the feeling of sitting in Italy rather than Southern California. A trickling fountain in the corner continues to add to the ambience.

Within seconds freshly baked Italian bread arrived at our table with Olive oil and herbs for dipping. Our server Omar (who is the epitome of a classic waiter, with wispy mustache to match – be sure to ask to be seated in his section) promptly greeted us with suggestions of wine; we decided on a crisp Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc which was excellent.

He then suggested Calamari for an appetizer, which would usually be our first choice, but the mussels caught our fancy instead. Swimming in a fabulous garlic and white wine based broth; the mussels burst with flavor and were very mild and fresh. You must dip at least a few pieces of bread into the garlic broth, uh, yummm!

For our main course we ordered Pollo e Spinaci (grilled chicken breast and baby spinach salad with roasted peppers tossed in a warm balsamic-Dijon mustard dressing) and Cavatappi con Salisicce (corkscrew pasta with homemade Italian sausage in a roasted tomato sauce with spinach and parmesan cheese). Both were excellent! The Pollo dish had a bountiful amount of chicken, which had a scrumptious flavor. The warm dressing made the entire salad melt in your mouth. The Cavatappi dish exceeded all expectations. The homemade sausage was moist and tender with a bit of a fiery flare (we were warned, which is always appreciated) and blended perfectly with the sauce and firm appetizing pasta. A delicious feast for all!

Most dishes are around the $15 range with the exception of the steak plates. Depending upon the time of your visit parking can be a chore, so don’t hesitate to take a spot when you find one, even if you have to stroll an extra block or two. The area is beautiful and makes for a lovely walk, whether you’re on your way to dine or not.
