One of the great things about the Hillcrest area of San Diego is the multitude of restaurants available for you to enjoy. Whether breakfast, lunch, dinner or an after nightclub pick-me-up, Hillcrest has it all. A fave of ours is a charming little Italian restaurant with a big heart called Arrivederci.
Located just off of trendy University Avenue, when you come upon Arrivederci you will discover a warm, unassuming eatery for you to enter. If the weather is good (hey, this is San Diego, so that is most of the time) take a table on the outside patio and enjoy the sun and the always interesting passerby’s.
Arrivederci is divinely quaint, making full use of the small space inside, and like in Italy, with tables’ nestled snuggly against each other. If you are a fan of fine wine you will enjoy the rows and rows of bottles. There are racks in the wall, racks in the ceiling and a massive wooden structure that is the centerpiece of the dining room. When the restaurant is full (which is often, as it is a popular destination) it almost feels like you are at a friend’s dinner party, with laughter and conversations filling the air. Allow yourself to relax and bask in the delightful tranquility of the venue.
We were there for lunch and had plenty of choices on Arrivederci’s appetizing menu. There are pasta dishes, soups and salads, chicken and seafood entrees and delicious appetizers. We started with Calamari Caruso (Calamari sautéed with white wine, tomato and fresh spinach) and Portobello Oreganata (Portobello Mushrooms grilled with seasoned bread crumbs). Both were scrumptious, a joy to eat and set the tone for the meal.
On to our entrée, being a sucker for pasta (but rarely indulge, you know, gotta watch the carbs baby) and since it was lunchtime (we had all day to work it off) and there were so many choices, one of us had to have pasta. It did not disappoint. An order of Capellini Arrabbiata Con Pollo (angel hair pasta with julienne chicken and spicy tomato sauce) was served up with plentiful portions. The pasta was cooked to perfection, so delectable and smooth; it was hard to resist acting like a six year-old and slurping the string of angel hair right between your teeth with a pop! The chicken was moist and cut to bite-size pieces and the spicy sauce dressed up the dish perfectly.
Salmone in Umido

Also ordered was the Salmone in Umido (Norwegian salmon sautéed in white wine, fresh vegetables and capers) that is another favorite. The salmon was presented exquisitely, with delicate flavoring and its texture scrumptious. The accompanying vegetables added splendidly to the dish, completing the meal. Additionally we enjoyed the Gamberi Nostromo (Shrimp, fresh herbs, mushrooms, in white wine and tomatoes). The shrimp were generously proportioned and the mushrooms created a nice compliment to the flavorful shrimp.
Arrivederci is moderately priced with validated parking available, which comes in handy because finding a spot can be hard during the lunch and dinner rush. The service is friendly and aim-to-please, creating a wonderful experience. So when you want a little taste of Italy, be sure to visit Arrivederci and enjoy the delectable dishes that await you. Enjoy!
