The Wavehouse

The boardwalk along Mission & Pacific Beach has some cool choices for grub if the mood hits you. Whether you’re walking, riding a bike or crawling up from the sandy shores, nothing says “beach” like Wavehouse. It is beach kitsch at its best (that’s a good thing) and all the fun in the sun you could hope for.

The Wavehouse has a great layout. There is a main eating/drinking area that just screams “beach party”. Heck, there’s even a shop to buy beach themed souvenirs and can almost be described as its own community. People mulling about, drinking a cocktail, eating or just soaking up the sun. This area also looks over the awesome simulated surf “flowrider” that is a unique man-made wave machine inviting you to boogie board or surf. An amazing engineering feat that is a blast just to watch.

The open patio is almost a part of the boardwalk and there’s an enclosed patio area a step up – all looking out over the beautiful ocean just yards away. Be forewarned though, as you’re indeed right on the beach so be wary of low flying birds – one decided to leave me his own special message.

The décor is classic Gilligan’s Island, with its tiki hut awnings and grass skirt style decorations. The tropics have nothing on this bad boy. The servers and hosts are all smiles (why wouldn’t they be, they get to work at the beach everyday) and all display that relaxed charm. The menu has many choices to satisfy any appetite. Breakfast is served all day with eggs, waffles, French toast and pancakes to entice you. They also have several salads to choose from to scrumptious burgers and fried foods. They’ve got exactly the kind of food you’d want at the beach.

Surf Rack O’ Ribs

We feasted on the Surf Rack O’ Ribs (baby back ribs slow-cooked, then grilled and topped with their homemade BBQ sauce) and the Skewered Filet (an 8-ounce filet skewered and served on a bed of onions and bell peppers and topped with teriyaki and wasabi sauce. The ribs were moist, fall of the bone good and the BBQ slathered generously on the meat and had a complimentary sweet and spicy flavor. The filet was equally tender and perfectly prepared. The entrees come with your choice of French fries, potato salad, fresh fruit, cottage cheese or tomato cucumber vinaigrette salad. We feasted on the perfectly crisp fries and a great, hearty cole slaw that had great crunch.

Most menu items are under the $10 mark, allowing you to enjoy a fun meal and not feel a sting to the pocketbook. Even their cocktail prices were extremely modest. The whole experience was one of relaxed comfort, eating a good meal while watching the wave’s crash. Not too shabby. Wavehouse has quickly become one of our favorite haunts on the boardwalk and will certainly do the same for you. Enjoy!

The Good – location, location, location.

The Bad – bummer that you can’t sip on a cocktail if you’re in the patio section just off the boardwalk, but laws are laws. Also, parking around Belmont Park during the summer can be a real challenge. Be prepared for a walk.
