new eatery options.

Now in its sixth year of operation, San Diego Restaurant Week is a twice-yearly excuse for exploring local dining options, new and old. What began as a notion by San Diego Magazine back in 2005 has taken on a life of its own, continuing to grow and shine in the dining rooms of San Diego.
The idea is simple. Create three-course prix fixe menus at extremely reasonable prices to encourage people to dine at old favorites or new venues. This year, more than 180 restaurants are putting their best plates forward to entice, dazzle and satiate palettes. You can see which restaurants are participating and at what price point at www.sandiegorestaurantweek.com.
Whether you enjoy American, Fusion, Italian, Thai or even the homemade California Cuisine, Restaurant Week will offer all of these culinary styles and more. The restaurants cross all borders, from the Gaslamp Quarter to Hillcrest, Kensington to the beach communities and North County. You name it, there is a participating restaurant near you.
Depending on the restaurant, the three-course prix fixe menus are set at $20, $30 or $40. The price points are designed to hopefully get the user to try restaurants they might not have before, either due to pricing or genre.
We decided to give a favorite a try and see how it stacked up compared to a regular night out. Cowboy Star was the venue of choice, and even though a few of the selections are not always available to order, dinner was awesome. It’s a great way to try different menu items and let the chefs get a bit creative at the same time.
Last year more than 100,000 people took advantage of Restaurant Week. This year, with everyone looking for deals and an excuse to go out, expectations are high that the event will draw big numbers. To make dining out simple, the Restaurant Week website is offering gift cards that can be bought online in the aforementioned price points. Go to www.sandiegorestaurantweek.com to purchase them, and save the hassle of plopping down your credit card (but don’t forget to leave a tip).
Restaurant Week runs from now to Friday (January 22). Advice: Try to forget your New Year’s resolutions for one week, and let yourself indulge in some really incredible food at incredible prices. Oh, and get over the fact that it’s raining and go have a good time.
