Mama's Day Celebrates 15th Anniversary
Mama's Day 2010.
The arrangement of dried willow branches sits to the right of the fireplace, and has for the past 18 years. Time to update the interior? Not really. Each time we look at the beautiful branches, they remind us of the very first time Mama’s Kitchen held its Mama’s Day event at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, 15 years ago. Being a member of the event committee, I was also part of the clean-up crew and ended up with this everlasting piece of memorabilia. That and an apron signed by Roseanne Barr…yes, it was that long ago.
For the past 20 years, Mama’s Kitchen has prepared and delivered three meals a day to San Diegans affected by AIDS and cancer. It’s almost a completely volunteer effort and dozens of people cook, package and deliver meals and smiles to hundreds of home-bound folks every day. The Mama’s Day event, held each year on Mother’s Day weekend is a big part of making that possible.
This year, one of the largest showings of chef’s to date will create delectable bites for the 600-plus guests who breathe life into this magical evening (May 7, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.). For foodies, it’s nirvana with more than you can possibly sample. For those who enjoy an active social life, it’s the place to be seen and mingle. Trust us…you’ll know at least 50 people there. Add the most important facet is that you are helping many local people to live happier, healthier and longer lives, and everyone wins.
Along with the food, a martini bar courtesy of Svedka Vodka pours, along with Sam the Cooking Guy possibly spinning to the DJ sounds that will fill the Hyatt Regency La Jolla Aventine. Tickets are $125 in advance and $150 at the door. We recommend popping for the $250 VIP tickets, which includes a private reception and a hosted bar. Besides, it’s for a great cause. Go for the VIP and you’ll get in early and avoid parking issues.
A silent auction--featuring suites at Petco Park, wines, special getaways and dining experiences--is also part of the night, so dust off that Platinum Card. Ropongi, Sante Ristorante, Island Prime, El Vitral, Japengo, Hash House and Vagabond are just a few of the fabulous restaurants that gather to create Mamas’ Day magic. Long time Mama’s Kitchen executive director Alberto Cortes promises an enchanting evening and what's more than likely to be a record-breaking evening.Nothing would make us happier.
