North Park Farmers Market Held Every Thursday
Each farmers market in San Diego is a vital piece of the neighborhood’s local flair and flavor, and the recently expanded North Park Farmers Market is no exception. With nearly 50 vendors offering food, produce and other artisan products, a Thursday afternoon in North Park is an adventure.
The North Park Farmers Market takes place 3-7 p.m. every Thursday in the parking lot behind CVS Pharmacy, near North Park Way and 32nd Street. Now, Herman Avenue is closed between University Avenue and North Park Way, which expands the farmers market territory from 30 tents to nearly 50. Parking along the surrounding streets (both metered and free) is fairly easy to find; there is also a large parking garage four blocks away at North Park Way and 29th Street.
Produce is plentiful at the market; for starters, JR Organics sells vegetables, Lone Oak Ranch and Smit Orchards sell fruits, and Rose Cottage Fruits has a variety of produce, herbs and fresh eggs. There’s also fish (Poppa’s Fresh Fish), cheeses (Taste Cheese), and specialty products, such as breads (Belen Bread), olive oils (Bistro Blends), almonds (Hopkins Ag), Greek foods (Lisko Imports) and more.
If you’re looking for an immediate remedy for a growling stomach, there are spicy, savory and sweet options to satisfy all appetites. Don Tommy’s Mexican Foods, Gourmet Tamales, Green Fix Smoothies, Ranchwood Deli and Barbecue, The Cookie Chew and others reel you in with enticing smells and free samples.
Cornbread Daddy is one of the unique vendors at North Park Farmers Market. Currently selling at only four farmers markets around town (North Park, Bonita Valley, Mission Hills and Webb Park/Rancho Bernardo), Cornbread Daddy sells baked specialty cornbreads and dry mixes. Eric Ayaso created the company in late fall 2010 after friends at a barbecue persuaded him to start selling his tasty products. Aiming to step away from traditional cornbread recipes, Ayaso sells such flavors of breads as Bacon & Cheddar, Cinnamon Crumble, Rosemary Lemon, Cranberry Cream, Fruitcake, and more. He has gluten-free breads (original and sun-dried tomato), as well as vegan offerings (pumpkin), and almost any recipe can be tailored to special diets. Of course, for the purists, there’s the Cornbread Daddy Original recipe.
Whether looking for a gift, looking for a snack or looking for something to cook for dinner, shoppers won’t leave the North Park Farmers Market empty-handed—or on an empty stomach.
