Coachella 2011 Artist Profile: !!!

Lane Coder

Named after the subtitles from the 1980 cult classic film The Gods Must Be Crazy, !!! (commonly pronounced Chk Chk Chk) have been on the forefront of the dance punk movement since their inception in 1996.

With an eclectic sound that combines elements of funk, dance, punk and hip-hop music, !!!’s self-titled debut was released in 2001 on former SoCal-based label, Gold Standard Laboratories. Filled with killer hooks and grooves, their debut album ignited a buzz about the group and their sophomore follow-up, 2004’s Louden Up Now elevated the band to headliner status as they quickly became festival favorites both in America and across the pond. In 2007 they continued their success as dance-punk’s reigning kings when they released their third album, Myth Takes on Warp Records to rave reviews from fans and critics alike.

Their latest album, 2010’s Strange Weather Isn’t It? continues the band’s longstanding tradition of creating dance music for the indie rock set. The band is often comprised of 6 to 9 members, and incorporates the use of live drums, guitars, keyboards and horns to supply a non-stop dance party as lead singer Nic Offer suggestively gyrates across the stage while keeping the energy going with outlandish lyrics about drugs, sex and the human condition.

Their appearance at Coachella in 2007 was quite memorable, as a sea of celebrities gathered to watch their set. In an interview from 2007 lead singer Nic Offer said, “Danny DeVito watched us from the side of the stage and he told us it was amazing when it was over. So that was pretty exciting. Coachella is just such a good vibe.” With an impending European tour and a handful of small West coast club shows on the horizon, !!!’s performance at this year’s Coachella will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the festival.

!!! perform at The Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival Friday, April 15, 2011.
