Saturday, April 9,1 - 5 p.m. is the Taste of Julian. The historic gold mining town one hour northeast of downtown San Diego becomes a culinary immersion course in flaky apple pie, grilled bites, and nips of regional wine harvests. The mountain retreats population grows like a zucchini in July with gourmands eager to wheedle recipes from local restaurant and vineyard owners. Artists will display their works at the 19 participating businesses. Tickets are $25 on the day of the event. Prevent a whirlwind visit of driving up and back in the same day by staying at one of Julian’s lovely country inns. Here are a few suggestions.

Julian Gold Rush Hotel
2032 Main Street Julian, CA 92036 (760) 765-0201
The iconic nationally registered historic landmark has been a fixture on Main Street since the 1890s. The Queen of the back country has the distinction of being the oldest continuously running hotel in Southern California. Sixteen rooms and cottages decorated with lace curtains and quilt-covered canopy beds are surrounded by lilacs and cedar trees. The parlor, fragranced with just-cut flowers, waylays guests with its well-stocked library, games and puzzles. Complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea are served in the dining room daily. (Rates start at $135 per night.)

Pine Hills Lodge
2960 La Posada Way Julian, CA 92036 (760) 765-1100
Meander along Julian’s sleepy country roads and you’ll come upon Pine Hills Lodge a few miles outside of town. The bark-on log cabins hide in the gigantic pine trees of the Cuyamaca Mountain forest. It’s a rustic retreat with smoke wafting from the lobby chimney. A 4,316-foot elevation brings crisp days and cool, star studded nights. The main chalet has six rooms, and the remaining nine accommodations, complete with claw-foot bathtubs and piles of pillows on the bed, are sprawled around the eight acres. Dine by the Grand Fireplace or saddle up to the bar for a meal worthy of a Michelin star. FYI: their Thanksgiving Day feast is not to be missed. (Rates start at $80 per night.)

Eaglenest Bed and Breakfast
2609 D Street Julian, CA 92036 (760) 765-1252
As the name implies, Eaglenest is perched on a hill above Main Street. It’s a home with four bedroom suites named after the seasons of the year. The B&B’s Goodwill Ambassadors - Luke, Leah, Will, and Grace - are four Golden Retrievers with a perpetual joie de vivre. Their days are filled with runs down the dirt drive, belly tickles from guests, and lounging. Leah helps check-in visitors. Family style breakfast starts at 9 a.m., with husband and wife innkeepers manning the griddle. Should your group size warrant more room, a six-person cabin is available. (Rates start at $175 per night.)

Butterfield Bed and Breakfast Inn
2284 Sunset Drive Julian, CA 92036 (760) 765-2179
Country décor is plentiful at this five-room inn. Rose Bud cottage, Apple “Sweet”, Stanza Italia, Country Corner and The Feather Nest rooms are filled with dried flowers, stenciled wallpaper, and wooden farm animal tschotskes. Visitors to the three-acre property love it. Testimonials from a Manhattan Beach guest gushed how it’s a “remembrance of simple things and a gentler life.” Their breakfast recipes are written up in three cookbooks. A popular feature of Butterfield is a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride into Julian for dinner. (Rates start at $135 per night.)
