With the release of their sophomore album, Safari Disco Club. French dance-pop trio, Yelle embarked on a recent tour of North America that brought them through The Casbah on Friday, May 20, 2011.
Fronted by Julie Budget, a pixie-like front-woman with a demure schoolgirl voice, Yelle’s sounds can best be described as a mixture of electronica and classic disco with the music provided by beat wranglers by GrandMarnier (AKA Jean-Francoise Perrier) and Tepr, while Yelle (aka Julie) provides her speak-sung lyrics over their disco loops and electronic effects. Safari Disco Club expands on Yelle’s already established futuristic sound, furthering the electro-infused dance music they first served up with 2007’s Pop-Up.
With an impressive live performance that bordered on performance art, Yelle’s performance at The Casbah was one of their last scheduled North American appearances making it an evening to savor before their hopeful return in late summer or fall 2011.
