A Shut & Open Case

Growing up and moving out is never easy and it’s almost always harder on the ones staying behind. Such is the case in the case of Green Flash Brewing Co. They’ve had so much success behind hop monsters like West Coast IPA and Hop Head Red that they’ve outgrown their Vista facility in a big way. Over the past several months, they’ve been working on moving their production operation to a new 45,000 square foot building near the Mira Mesa-Sorrento Boulevard border that’s nearly ten times as large as their original brewhouse. It’s a big and well deserved bump up in the beery food chain, but for North County denizens who made regular pilgrimages to the Vista facility, it’s bittersweet to say the least. Owners Mike and Lisa Hinkley realize this and, in order to help their fans (and themselves) cope with the separation anxiety, they’re holding a specialy Farewell/Customer Appreciation Party from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 29 with complimentary food and prizes. Hopefully, the sting of their departure will have worn off in time for devotees to enjoy Green Flash’s Grand Opening Party in Mira Mesa on July 23, noon to 4 p.m. 1430 Vantage Court, Vista; 6550 Mira Mesa Boulevard, Mira Mesa

Wake Up in a Fogg

The communities in San Diego’s urban core and the begs situated along State Route 78 have it going on where craft beer’s concerned with restaurants and bars devoted to the medium. Yet, the areas in between have a lot fewer options and have, thus far, failed to really close the gap dividing the two. So, it’s great to see a lesser known spot, Phileas Foggs Bar and Restaurant, bringing it on the beer front. From June 2 through 5, they’ll be holding FOGG-A-PALOOZA; a four-day celebration devoted to local brews. Each night, brewers will be on-hand to meet and greet their loyal imbibers and talk about the exclusive beers they have available. Live bands, commemorative glassware and t-shirts will also be in the mix nightly. 11385 Poway Road, #100, Scripps Ranch

Spring is in the Pint

Beaumont’s Eatery, a gem of a neighborhood joint nestled on the main drag in Bird Rock, is the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by while downing tasty food. Up until now, their bevy of hand-crafted cocktails has been the main adult beverage draw, but on June 4, they’re diversifying their portfolio, holding their first ever Spring Beer Thing. Held from noon to 4 p.m., the SBT will feature variety of beers from the likes of Ballast Point, Stone, Iron Fist and Pizza Port and some great accoutrements in the form of live music and some thoughtfully prepared edibles developed specifically to pair with those brews. Think barbecue, bratwursts and street tacos (we can only hope they use the same tender pork they stuff in their openly decadent chille rellenos) and live music from the John Stanley King Band. Four-ounce beer samples will be $2 with larger 10-ounce pours available for $4 apiece. With a lineup like that, one can only hope this seasonally driven event rears its sudsy head three more times per year. 5662 La Jolla Boulevard, Bird Rock

Twenty/20 Vision

With its proximity to renowned operations like Pizza Port Carlsbad, it was only a matter of time before Twenty/20 Grill and Wine Bar at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa got on the beer bus. Actually, they’ve been at it for some time with their Brewsday Tuesdays where brewers and brewery reps stop by on the second day of the work week (about the time most people are growing weary of the work week) to “educate palates” over the course of an all night happy hour featuring the beers of the night’s brewery of choice. Local companies are the main focus of these events—Oceanside Ale Works will be featured on June 7 with Airdale Brewing Company following them on June 14—but out-of-towners are every bit as welcome. Case in point, the arrival of Santa Margarita-based Cismontane Brewing Company on May 31. 5480 Grand Pacific Drive, Carlsbad
