Since its opening in 1973, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center has set the standard for major science museums throughout the country.  It holds the honor of being the first science museum to ever mix interactive exhibits with an IMAX Dome theater and planetarium. Located in beautiful Balboa Park, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is a top attraction for visitors to San Diego.

The Fleet Center consists of over 100 engaging and creative exhibits designed to educate the public in different scientific concepts. The assortment of traveling and permanent exhibits help bring variety to the museum, while at the same time keeping a consistency that visitors can look forward to each and every visit.

The two traveling exhibits currently at the Fleet Center are Geometry Playground and Identity: An Exhibition of You. Geometry Playground, which will be at the museum until June 10, 2012, offers guests more than 20 hands-on exhibits about the most visible branch of math. Instead of the textbook version, you will be creating geometric works of art.

Some of the most popular permanent exhibitions include the Gallery of Illusions and Perceptions, Look! Listen! Touch! and Kid City.  Geared toward children ages five and under, Kid City offers small children a place in the museum to call their own. Some of the features in this exhibit are a grocery store, fire station and ball wall, all complete with multiple knobs and levers for kids to play with.

Probably the most famous feature of the Fleet Center is the IMAX Dome theater. The first of its kind ever produced, this dome theater consists of a circular screen that covers the walls and ceilings and transforms a movie viewing into a cherished experience. For discounted prices to movies in the dome theater, come Friday night at 6 p.m. for Friday At the Fleet. One film costs $9.50, with each additional film only costing $6.

The Fleet Center also provides camps for children of all ages and workshops for educators. These public programs are designed to enlighten the public about science in a way that is engaging and enjoyable.

Prices for gallery visits range from $9.75 for kids and seniors to $11.75 for adults. For an IMAX feature along with a gallery visit, the price rises to  $12.75 for kids and seniors and $15.75 for adults. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday.

The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center provides an escape from the silence and calmness of other museums. Visitors of all ages will truly enjoy and benefit from their time at the Fleet Center.
