VIDEO: Napoleon Dynamite Cast Visits Comic-Con 2011
The cult film classic will become a FOX animated series
Ever since Napoleon Dynamite hit theaters in 2004, ninjas and tater tots have risen on the popularity charts. The cult classic film gave America such wonderfully awkward one-liners, some sweet dance moves and a handful of Halloween costumes. Now, seven years later, Napoleon and the gang are back. The film is set to become a FOX animated series.
The entire original cast has signed on for the animated series, said to be debuting in 2012. The writers of the film, Jared and Jerusha Hess, are producers of the FOX series, along with writer/producer Mike Scully, the longtime producer of The Simpsons.
The series picks up right where the movie left off in the rural Idaho town of Napoleon and his family and friends. Napoleon’s best friend Pedro is now class president, Napoleon himself still loves ligers (the animated series may prove a perfect format for debuting a liger on television), Rex is still running the local dojo, and Grandma is active as ever, four-wheeling with her friends. However, some changes had to be made in order to make the live-action film translate to animation. For example, Pedro, who used to be a pretty silent character, has become more vocal. Deb, who was famous for her side ponytail, takes on a more perky personality. And, there will be plenty of guest characters throughout the first season, including Jennifer Coolidge, Sam Rockwell and Jermaine Clement. Of course, expect some sweet new catchphrases to emerge, too.
SanDiego.com spoke with Jon Heder (Napoleon), Tina Majorino (Deb), Efren Ramirez (Pedro), Diedrich Bader (Rex), Jon Gris (Uncle Rico) and the rest of the cast on Thursday of Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego. Watch the video above for the scoop on the series, special guest characters, the hidden talents of Heder, and how it was to step back into character after an absence of seven years.
