This morning, early purchasers of the upcoming Electronic Arts FPS game, Battlefield 3 (BF3) were greeted with an invitation email in their inbox. The email, titled “Your Personal Invitation to the Battlefield 3 Beta” came with the following text:


Hi Soldier,

In the coming weeks we will be running an Open Beta for Battlefield 3. To thank you for Pre-Ordering Battlefield 3 at Origin™, we would like to invite you to join the PC Open Beta 48 hours early. The purpose of the Open Beta is to give you an early look at Battlefield 3 as well as give us a chance to get your feedback. Make sure to visit battlelog.battlefield.com for forums, powerful social features, a feed of your friends' progress and achievements, and detailed player stats and leader boards.

Dates: September 27th - October 10th
Platform: PC

Starting on the 29th, you can also test the Open Beta on Xbox 360® or PlayStation®3.

1)  If you don't have the Origin client already installed, please do the following:
     Go here: http://www.origin.com/ language and click your language.
     Click "Download Origin" to install the Origin client.
     Follow instructions given during the installation.
2) Once you have Origin installed, run it and log in with your Origin ID.
3) Click the gear icon in the top menu bar, and then select "Redeem Product Code".
4) Enter your Battlefield 3 Open Beta Early Access product code: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
5) Click on the "My Games" tab in the top left.
6) Find the Battlefield 3 Open Beta panel, and click on the "Ready to Download" button.
7) Click on the Download Now button, and follow the instructions of the Battlefield 3 installer.

BF3 will be the first PC game to utilize the Frostbite 2.0 engine, a game engine series which has mainly been utilized in BF games. Frostbite 1.0 originally debuted in 2008 with BF: Bad Company and introduced new FPS standards such as HDR audio. Frostbite 1.5 was deployed in 2009 inside BF1943BF: Bad Company 2BF Bad Company 2: Vietnam and the multiplayer component of Medal of HonorBF3 will debut Frostbite 2.0, and 2.0 will be the first generation of the engine to fully utilize both DirectX 11 as well as 64-bit processors, and will remove all support for DirectX9 and Windows XP.

The PC version of BF3 is currently available for preorder at Gamestop, Amazon, Best Buy or online from EA, which at $59.95 will be a Limited Edition release that includes (depending on your choice of PC or console):

Physical Warfare Pack (Bonus item for PC Download purchases only) with the following weapons:
Type 88 LMG with bipod
Flechette Ammo for DAO-12 Shotgun
Flash suppressor for SKS sniper rifle
Day 1 Access to the DAO-12 Shotgun
