It's a family affair
What have you been doing for the past 12 years? Getting your degree? Raising a family? Traveling the world? Doug Wiens and his family spent the past 12 years nurturing a small grape growing venture into a large and successful winery in Temecula.
Wiens, an easy-going yet engaging man, started growing grapes on seven acres in Lodi (an emerging wine region outside of Sacramento) to sell to local wineries before relocating to Southern California. After extensive research he concluded that Temecula was similar to the northern end of Napa Valley and could support the Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Malbec.) Wiens joined forces with three of his brothers, moved to Temecula, bought vineyards, built a winery and became known for his “Big Red” wines.
The sign in the front of the winery says “Big Red” wines - and they will not disappoint. They also offer a unique Chardonnay, half of which are aged in oak barrels and half stainless steel tanks. They’ve even started production on a Pinot Noir. Wiens Family Cellars has become known for their rich and earthy Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Barbera to name just a few.
Wiens Family Cellars opened in 2006 and is located in the heart of the Temecula Wine Country. Designed by architect George Wiens, the winery includes a tasting room, events pavilion and a large state of the art production facility. The tasting room appears barnlike from the exterior, flanked by large patios, with tables and chairs for al fresco sipping or picnicking. Inside, the large tasting room is decorated in rich dark woods, a theme that runs throughout the facility. Large renditions of their different wine labels created by local artists adorn the walls. Regular wine club members can enjoy a private VIP tasting room that is open on weekends.
The winery recently opened an ultra-chic Reserve Cellar Room, with sleek wood dining tables and cushy leather chairs for seated tastings. This private tasting room, lined with oak barrels and silver vats is exclusively available to select Wine Club members. Here you can taste Reserve wines like the Grand Rouge, the 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2007 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The latter is spectacular with hints of black currant, blackberries and coffee. All of the Wiens Family Cellars high end wines have a limited production.
If you’re looking for a beautiful location for a wedding, the winery recently built their outdoor Mountain View Pavilion right beside the vineyards. A short stroll from the Pavilion is an indoor entertainment hall for receptions, corporate events and private parties.
The future for some of the Wiens family is in beer. Doug Wiens and his son Luke, are collaborating with Black Market Brewery to create a line of hand-crafted beers. Look for a Wiens Family Brewery to pop up soon in old town Temecula. The Wiens Family have branched out in to Newport Beach, where they recently purchased the Orange Coast Winery. You’ll have to visit Wiens Family Cellars in Temecula to purchase their wines, as this is the only location where you can buy them. Some local restaurants carry their line, but you won’t find them at local wine stores. Doug says the family mission is, “to make the highest quality wine and provide it at a reasonable price.
