San Diego Bands To Watch In 2012
Featuring Heavy Hawaii, Jamuel Saxon & Beaters
While you were busy making New Year’s resolutions that wouldn’t even see the first of February, unbeknownst to you, your favorite bands of 2012 were hard at work creating music that will become the glorious soundtrack to your new year. Over the next twelve months, San Diego’s best bands will be discovered and the city’s established rock legends will release new albums that will make you fall in love with them all over again.
To give you a preview of what local rock bands have in store for you this year, SanDiego.com compiled a list of local bands to lookout for in 2012.
Newcomers The Howls embrace the kind of carefree rock n’ roll that you would expect from a San Diego band – organic rock threaded with alt-country undertones, and delivered with the artful recklessness of musicians simply enjoying themselves in an all out jam session. Although, these dangerously likeable rockers have yet to put out an album, they’ve already toured extensively, sharing the stage with bands such as Portugal. The Man, and Fitz and the Tantrums. Not surprisingly, The Howls’ impending full length album will be released on January 27, and is bound to be one of this year’s most talked about albums. The band will be celebrating on with a blowout show at The Casbah. The evening promises to deliver an extra special performance along with the debut record, as Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek will be making a guest appearance during The Howl’s set.
If you gave traditional island musicians some controlled substances before they sat down to play, the outcome would be similar to the glorious sounds that is Heavy Hawaii. The band’s trance inducing tunes mimic the breezy music from dream vacations on sunny beaches laced with a wispy psychedelic finish. With a sound as unusual as Heavy Hawaii’s, it’s no wonder the band has quickly gained fans despite having just formed in 2010. It may only be January but Heavy Hawaii already has big plans for the new year including an EP release on the January 31 followed by a full length album this summer, all amidst a busy touring schedule. You can catch Heavy Hawaii at their next show on the January 28 at M-Theory Music.
Midnight Rivals is arguably one of San Diego’s best kept secrets. A true down and dirty, no holds barred rock n’ roll band, Midnight Rivals is an act you don’t want to miss this. Known for their live shows, Midnight Rivals command audiences with the help of singer Charlie Ware whose compelling enthusiasm and Jagger-inspired dance moves complete the already buzz-worthy performance. The band’s on-stage prowess comes as no surprise, as Midnight Rivals boasts an impressive pedigree with members from some of San Diego’s greatest rock bands including Lucy’s Fur Coat, Rocket from the Crypt, and Louis XIV. You can catch Midnight Rivals next month at Anthology where the band will be playing on February 25 alongside The Nervous Wreckords. If you’re lucky, the rockers may even have some new tracks to play at the show, as they are currently working on fresh material for an EP to be released later this year.
Transfer definitely didn’t find their way onto our list because they’re slipping under anyone’s radar. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. As one of the city’s biggest and most adored bands, Transfer will make waves in 2012 as they tour across the US this spring with Britain’s all-star rockers, the Kaiser Chiefs, even making a stop at the legendary South by Southwest music festival. Alas, for many of Transfer’s local fans, this news will only be the second most exciting thing they hear this year. Instead, Transfer fanatics will be thrilled to know that despite having just released an album a few months ago, the band is working on putting out another record with a hopeful release date in September 2012.
