San Diego is home to many a wine lover, but ask any vino fanatic and they will tell you that outside of frequenting wine bars, the options for securing a good merlot or a crisp chardonnay is not brimming with possibilities. While wine bars are great, admittedly one needs to look elsewhere if they are hoping to seat a large group or let alone trying to catch a Chargers game. Unfortunately, though, many regular bars tend to be less than vino friendly, overlooking their wine list and often only serving a house red or white from a dubious airplane-sized bottle.

In effort to save the city’s wine inclined drinkers from the despair of being poured a less than satisfactory glass of vino, SanDiego.com has put together a list of bars that know how to serve up the vino with a refreshing change of scenery.
Back in college everyone thought that pizza and beer was an unbeatable combination, but URBN Coal Fired Pizza in North Park proves that pizza and wine is the way of the future. Modeled after a city warehouse, URBN’s brick walls and industrial detailing exudes a fun, trendy atmosphere where visitors can enjoy craft pizzas and an all-around stellar drink menu. URBN is a the perfect destination for catering to a party with differing and discerning beverage tastes as they boast an extensive wine, beer, and cocktail list that aims to please. There is undoubtedly something here for everybody, particularly the wine drinker, with carefully selected wines ranging from sparkling Cava to Grenache blends. If those aren’t enough reasons to toast to, URBN also offers their PIE-NO-MITE happy hour on weekdays from 4-7pm where you receive a small specialty pizza with the purchase of any bottle of wine.

Beer and sports have always gone hand in hand so it’s not surprising that the closer you get to a baseball field or a football game, often the worse the wine gets. Pretty soon you are drinking a wine of questionable origin out of a clear plastic cup that the bartender can only describe by color. Luckily though, Proper Gastro Pub located adjacent to the Petco Park baseball stadium, is going against the grain and serving up delicious glasses of quality vino. With plentiful beer and wine options, this London inspired pub is a great place to grab a glass on your way to the ball game or even to enjoy pairing with some British dishes like Guinness Braised Short Rib or the traditional fish and chips. Cheers to that, mate!

Ever tried to find a decent glass of wine at a sports bar? For a long time it has merely been the elusive dream of San Diegan wine lovers, but The Fleetwood lounge, nestled in the heart of Gaslamp, combines a lengthy drink list boasting nearly a 100 bottles of wine with a comparatively large number of HD-TVs for a combination that is heavenly on game days. So ladies, the next time your man insists on spending Sunday in front of the tube as he tracks every single one of his fantasy football players, make sure that you go to The Fleetwood where you are guaranteed to have a good cocktail or glass of wine nearby. Lose the ball and chain that once bound you to Bud Light on game days, and set your palate free at The Fleetwood.

Since opening in 2009, Small Bar has been a Mecca for beer lovers all across San Diego, luring in the craft beer crowd with the promise of over 40 sudsy brews all at the taps of their fingers. Needless to say, it isn’t often that you spot a glass of wine among the throes of impassioned beer lovers at the University Heights based hang out, but this is actually one beer bar that doesn’t neglect their wine list. In fact, Small Bar openly claims “a small selection of high quality wines” and craft cocktails that are carefully taste tested by the owners. So while you won’t be overwhelmed by the aroma of possibilities, you will be able to enjoy a reputable glass of some classic wines on your next night out with any beer drinking buddies. And if that isn’t enough to intrigue you, stop by during the daily happy hours from 5-8pm for a dollar off the drink of your choice.
