San Diego parents know the struggle: finding a daycare or preschool that actually feels like an extension of home — warm, personal, and grounded in nature — can feel nearly impossible. That’s what makes Green Beans Preschool, with locations in Hillcrest and Linda Vista, such a standout. Instead of crowded, high-stress environments, Green Beans offers something rare — a warm, nature-rooted, play-driven program designed specifically for infants and toddlers. With low ratios, chemical-free classrooms, and a philosophy built around real connection, Green Beans gives little ones the kind of start most parents dream of: gentle, joyful, and filled with San Diego sunshine.
A Green Start for the City’s Little Sprouts
Green Beans Preschool offers families an experience more akin to a home away from home than a typical daycare. Founder Louise Kristofferson calls it a “cozy, warm environment where kids can explore and get messy.”
For families with newborns — babies as young as six weeks — the school provides infant care done right: each little one has their own crib and dedicated care space, and experienced caregivers follow each baby’s individual routine for feeding, sleeping, and play.
Parents receive daily notes and photos, so they never miss a milestone — those first coos, yawns, smiles, and sleepy sighs. It’s a space where every moment of connection matters — and where early childhood unfolds with warmth, security, and love.
Toddler Time: Curiosity, Confidence & Play
As babies grow into toddlers, Green Beans’ philosophy evolves with them. For ages two to three, the daycare program invites children into a world of moving bodies, busy hands, and bubbling imaginations. Here, play is at the heart of it all.
Each day brings a blend of structured group time and free play, designed to build physical, social, and emotional skills. Toddlers paint, build, climb, dance, sing, run, and laugh, all under the gentle guidance of caring teachers. Outdoor exploration, fresh-air time, and sensory-rich activities support motor development — and foster a love of nature and discovery. In a city where parking lots and high-rises can dominate, Green Beans offers a little slice of grown-up-free childhood: movement, imagination, and belonging.

Meet Louise
Louise Kristofferson is an early childhood educator with a degree in Child Development from SDSU and more than a decade of experience. She first launched Green Beans as a small in-home daycare when her son Henry was born. Her program centered on hands-on learning, organic living, and a whole lot of love. Within two years, demand outgrew her home, and in 2014 she expanded into the warm, nature-focused preschool that families know today. Louise remains deeply involved and loves greeting new families as they join the Green Beans community.
Healthy Bodies Start Here
Louise is “passionate about organic food and helping kids develop a palate for healthy food later in life.” The school prioritizes organic, wholesome foods that fuel growing bodies and curious minds. Snacks and meals (when provided or recommended) stay true to Green Beans’ “chemical-free, green” philosophy, making nutrition a natural part of each child’s day. The goal is simple: start healthy habits early, and give every child the best foundation to grow strong.
Hillcrest and Linda Vista Locations
Green Beans Preschool welcomes families from all over central San Diego — Hillcrest, Mission Valley, Linda Vista, North Park, University Heights, Serra Mesa, and beyond. Their two campuses were chosen with real life in mind: one tucked right by Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, the other just minutes from the University of San Diego in Linda Vista. Whether you’re heading into a long shift at the medical center or making your morning commute across town, there’s a Green Beans campus close enough to make your day a little easier.
Why Green Beans Resonates With San Diego Parents
Green Beans isn’t just a daycare and preschool— it’s a community that honors childhood as a time of wonder, comfort, and shared discoveries.
- Low child-to-caregiver ratios — Infants and toddlers receive individual attention, consistency, and emotional safety.
- Organic & chemical-free commitment — From clean indoor spaces to healthy nutrition when mealtime begins, Green Beans aims for a holistic, health-first environment.
- Nature-centered learning & play — Sunshine, gardens, outdoor play areas, stroller walks: fresh air and natural light are as core to the program as storytime and naps.
- Emphasis on early development — Whether through tummy time for newborns or climbing and dancing for toddlers, everything is designed to support emotional, social, cognitive, and physical growth.
- More Than Care — It’s Your Village
What sets Green Beans apart isn’t just the spaces or the ratios, but the sense of genuine care and connection. Teachers strive to become part of each child’s life: soothing at nap time, cheering on first steps, celebrating the breakthroughs, the giggles, even the messy finger-paint projects. In their vision, children grow not just in size, but in confidence, curiosity, kindness, and love for learning — all unfolding at their own pace.
