A New Way to Celebrate Hump Day!
Looking for a unique travel experience? Not many people can say they have been to a camel farm; believe it or not, there is one right here in the San Diego area! Whether visiting from out of town or already living in San Diego, it would be a shame to miss this amazing opportunity. Oasis Camel Dairy (as seen on the hit show Dirty Jobs) is located on 34 beautiful rolling acres of land in Ramona, CA. This farm is home to founders Gil and Nancy, many animal caretakers, and their huge family of camels! The farm is also home to various birds, whose performances have been broadcast on shows such as Pet Star, The Ellen Degeneres Show, and The Tonight Show. The farm hosts tours, sells unique gifts made of camel milk, and puts on various festivals throughout the year, including the upcoming Pomegranate Days.
The farm opens its gates to the public for walking tours on designated dates throughout the year. During the tour, visitors will see the pastures and facilities that house the camels; several of them will actually come up close! This makes for many petting opportunities. Tours also include camel rides for kids and adults. The farm hosts private tours, as well, for school groups and others who want to visit. Participating in a tour is a great way to spend a humorously intimate time with the camels! The next public tour of the season will be held on October 19 from 12:30-5:30.
An exciting upcoming event is the fourth annual Pomegranate Days festival at the farm. The pomegranate is a delicacy in the Middle East, and camels love them. At this special event, tour guests will also get to see some of the amazing birds that live on the farm. The Oasis Camel Dairy Bird Show is not one to miss. There will also be camel rides just like during the normal tours. The highlight of the festival, however, is its namesake: pomegranates! All guests get the opportunity to hand feed pomegranates to the camels. There is no better way to get messy and spend quality time with these animals. This is an amazing experience that is unique to Oasis Camel Dairy! This year, the Pomegranate Days will be held on November 22 and 23 from 11am to 5pm.
Oasis Camel Dairy is America’s first camel milking farm. Camel dairy farming is a more sustainable alternative to cow dairy farming in certain regions. Many camel species are well-adapted to desert conditions, so camel farms do not require extensive water and electricity like a dairy farm. Camel milk contains various proteins with antimicrobial components; these proteins are not found in cow milk. At Oasis Camel Dairy, the camel milk is used to make many products which make for very unique gifts: camel milk soap and camel milk lotion. They also import camel milk chocolate! All of these items are available for purchase at Oasis Camel Dairy following public tours and during the Pomegranate Days festival.
