San Diego - The Pawfect Place for Pets
The old adage may say, "It's a dog's life," but whoever termed that phrase certainly didn't own a pet in dog-friendly San Diego. Anyone would be ecstatic to lead a dog's life in America's Finest City as it welcomes your pup to stay at hotels, dine at restaurants and play off leash at parks and beaches. Dogs are after all, man's best friend, and in San Diego they're dog-gone treated like it!
Hotels: You and your pup are welcome to come, sit and stay a while at the various pet-friendly accommodations in San Diego. Pet-friendly hotels include Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa, Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa and Hotel Indigo who all welcome furry guests, and The Sofia Hotel goes as far as gifting your pooch with a "Pampered Paws" package.
Parks: Pack up the Frisbee and plenty of tennis balls and head over to any one of the various off-leash doggy parks in San Diego. Rancho Bernardo park features 2.5 acres ideal for an intense game of fetch while Balboa Park offers two leash-free parks, Nate's Point and Morley Field. Poway Dog Park is another off-leash Fido-friendly park, which is a 1.75 acre fenced-in grass area where Spot can socialize and run free.
Beaches: Ocean Beach Dog Beach is every dog's dream come true as pooches can doggy paddle in the waves, dig in the sand and make four-legged friends at this off-leash beach. Sparky is also welcome to roam freely at Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, while the dog beach in Del Mar allows your canine to run leash-free from September until June. Un-clip the leash and let your tail-wagger feel the sea breeze sweep through his fur as he kicks up the sand at these dog-friendly San Diego beaches.
Doggie Dining: Lady and The Tramp glorified puppy dining at its finest, and now numerous San Diego restaurants welcome humans and puppies to dine in mixed company. Restaurants including Georges on Fifth, Sally's Seafood on the Water and O'Bistro allow pets to chill on the patio and feast on complimentary treats and biscuits. Other pet-friendly restaurants such as Shades Oceanfront Bistro encourage doggy-date night where your pup won't be able to keep his paws off of the lean roast beef and grilled chicken breast from the restaurant's special Fido Menu.
Yappy Hour: Various San Diego restaurants and bars host Yappy Hours, which give you and your dog something to wag your tails about. Sip on a cocktail with your pup at your feet during doggy-friendly happy hours at St. Germaine's Cafe, Porto Vista Hotel and Hotel Indigo. Your mutt will be sure to follow his nose and lead you to La Jolla Brew House during Yappy Hour where canine cuisine is served as well.
K-9 Surfing: Sure you've heard of work like a dog, but what about surf like a dog? Surfing is a staple sport in San Diego, and there's no reason why you're pup can't shred the waves too. The Helen Woodward Animal Center teaches doggy surf lessons so that your four-legged companion can catch waves just like you. If your pooch really masters hanging ten, enroll him in the annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition!
Shopping: San Diego understands that your furry pal is your moral support system, and that even includes when you're trying on swim suits! It can be "ruff" shopping solo, so that's why Horton Plaza shopping mall allows you to bring man's best friend on your shopping spree for support and encouragement, but before inviting him along for some retail therapy, just make sure that Spike is well behaved and leashed.
Hot dog, that's a lot of doggy-and-me time! Whether it's spoiling your pet to a day of leash-free fun or inviting him along for happy hour cocktails and a dinner date on the patio, you'll find plenty of tail wagging fun when you visit San Diego.
