Sapori - Affordable Fine-Dining in Coronado

Sapori restaurant in Coronado

Laura and Raffaele Petrazzulo opened San Diego’s Sapori on Coronado Island in 2010 and we’re so glad they did! Sapori’s casual but classy atmosphere is indicative of your dining experience as a whole: delicious fine Italian dining at an affordable price. Grab a seat outdoors on mild evenings for a romantic dinner, or sit inside and drool over the glass cases full of incredible looking pastries (and yes! They taste as good as they look!) The back patio overlooks Orange Avenue, so you can scope out the shopping district, museums and shops, people watch or just soak up the island air of Coronado. San Diego Sapori’s interior (if you can ignore those pastries,) is well decorated in a low-key Italian style which feels genuine without being over the top or kitschy. The island setting of Coronado combined with Sapori’s cuisine and decor lends to day dreaming about gondola rides down the canals of Venice….

Sapori sports a laid back ambiance which is friendly and engaging, with owner Raffaele introducing himself and chatting it up with you before your meal. What a nice hands-on, personal touch! The staff are really friendly and eager to serve, an important part of any dining experience! The whole team at Sapori in Coronado definitely wants to keep us coming back again and again!

Sapori’s menu features fresh and local produce which Chef Laura incorporates into all of Sapori’s dishes, serving you the freshest flavors and supporting local farmers at the same time. The menu rotates seasonally so that patrons get only the freshest dishes possible in every season. That said, Sapori’s house special is a MUST have! Their Fried Zucchini Blossoms features lovely zucchini flowers that are filled with ricotta and dipped in a light batter before being fried. The blossoms come with a basil dressing, and the whole thing looks so good you almost don’t want to eat it! (….Almost! Mmmm…) Follow the zucchini with some Baked Lasagna: layer after layer of homemade pasta covered with beef ragu and fresh creamy cheeses…..aaaahh!

When you dine at this popular San Diego Restaurant, make sure to check out Sapori’s awesome wine list! With lots of Italian wines to choose from, pick a favorite or ask your server about what goes best with your entrée of choice! The servers are really friendly and knowledgeable and will help you make a great choice! Sapori is home to Castellani Wine, a sought-after and hard to find exclusive wine from Castelan Estate in Italy. Sapori recently hosted a Wine Dinner with Piergiorgio Castellani, Winemaker for Castellani Estate so make sure you give Castellani a try!

Pro-tip: Owner and chef Laura is trained as a pastry chef and chocolatier, so, remember those pastries? Yeah, don’t even think about skipping dessert. Chef Laura’s cream puff and miniature pastries are award winning, and her gluten-free orange almond cake (made using a secret family recipe) is mouth-watering…You won’t be able to get enough!

Few restaurants in San Diego really cater to your whole experience the way Sapori in Coronado does! From the individual attention of Raffaele and his staff, to the tasteful Italian style, to the FOOD! It’s really cool that San Diego’s Sapori also offers a Gluten-Free menu for diners with special dietary needs or preferences, or who are just trying to eat healthier. Sapori does things right and it shows – this little gem of a restaurant is really popular with San Diego locals and visitors, so reservations are a must on weekends and holidays! You’ll find a quieter dinner setting earlier in the evenings or during the week, so try a lunchtime visit, or hit up Sapori for a 5 o’clock dinner before a movie or museum tour. The vibe of a crowded night at Sapori is definitely cool, and fun to enjoy, but it’s well worth an earlier dining hour to get to know the owners and serving staff!

Sapori is THE choice for Italian dining on Coronado Island, and a top choice for San Diego in general! Make sure you check out this family-owned slice of Italy in our very own San Diego.
