Sometimes, during the course of serving our country, service members suffer injuries. They can range from mildly inconvenient to complete disability. To compensate personnel, the Veterans Affairs Department has established criteria for determining the level of disability and an appropriate compensation chart.

Disability compensation is not an automatic happenstance, injured service members must apply for the monthly benefit and undergo testing to corroborate their injuries. They will then be assigned a disability rating, which ranges from 0% to 100%, incrementally increasing by 10%. It's one of the factors that determines the monthly stipend, along with the severity of the injury and whether the applicant has any dependents to support.

Disability payments are tax-free, but it's important to note that they are not permanent. Oftentimes, they come up for review and may require more testing or corroboration. Sometimes the benefit amounts change, as well.

The compensation levels for 2024 are as follows.
