PRO TEAMS

There are the sports teams call San Diego home. The city is filled with baseball, soccer, and even rugby fans. 

San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres are a Major League Baseball team that was founded in 1969. The team is the only franchise in the four major sports leagues (MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA) located in the city’s sports market. The team has never won a World Series, but it has had 16 winning seasons. In 1984 and 1998, the team won National League pennants. The players call Petco Park their home, and their spring training complex is located in Peoria, Arizona.


San Diego Wave FC

The San Diego Wave FC is a brand new National Women’s Soccer League expansion team that was founded in 2021. It’s the area’s first female professional soccer team since 2003. Since their inception in 2013, the San Diego Waves have established themselves as a mainstay of the city's burgeoning soccer scene, drawing talented players from all across the area and developing a devoted fan base. As a result of the team's dedication to nurturing new talent and attacking style of play, several of its players went on to compete at higher levels. The San Diego Waves are more than simply a soccer team, they are an integral element of the city's sports scene and a source of pride for fans and supporters with a focus on community involvement and player development.

The players made it to the playoffs in 2022, their inaugural season. Alex Morgan, who co-captained the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team from 2018 to 2020, is among the new club’s players. 


San Diego Loyal SC

The San Diego Loyal SC is a men’s soccer expansion team that was founded in 2019. The owner of the team is Landon Donovan, who has been named the greatest American soccer player of all time by Major League Soccer (MLS). The team is part of the United Soccer League, the biggest professional soccer organization in the country. 


San Diego Gulls

The San Diego Gulls are a professional American Hockey League (AHL) team. In 2015, the Anaheim Ducks announced it purchased their AHL affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals, and moved them to America’s Finest City. That team became the San Diego Gulls and started paying in the 2015-2016 season. 

Although the team is relatively new, San Diego’s hockey history dates all the way back to 1944, and there have been several iterations of the SD Gulls in the past. 


San Diego Legion

The San Diego Legion is a men’s Major League Rugby (MLR) team. That is the highest level of rugby in the U.S. Like many of the other sports teams in the city, it is fairly new. The team was founded in 2017. In 2022, the team made it to the playoffs but was ultimately eliminated.
