BOATING

Boating is a popular activity in San Diego because of the steady winds and mild climate. San Diego has many great spots for taking your boat and an abundance of places to dock your boat. The laid-back vibes, the stunning views, and the endless attractions for visitors and residents of all ages make San Diego the place to be.

Boating License Requirements

Individuals 16 and older must have a California Boater Card if they plan on operating a vessel with a motor of 15 hp or more. Individuals between the ages of 12 to 15 are allowed to operate vessels with a motor of 15 hp or more, but they must have supervision from someone 18 or older, and this person needs their California Boater Card.

Many rules must be followed when operating a boat in San Diego, such as keeping boat speeds to 5 mph or less when you’re within 1,000 feet of the oceanfront coastline. Boaters should have one throwable flotation device, one wearable floatation device per person on the boat, one sound-producing device, and a marine-type fire extinguisher, among other safety items.

Docking Your Boat

San Diego is full of places to dock your boat safely. Some marinas have guest rates which charge a certain amount per foot plus electricity rates. If you need a long-term docking solution, some marinas offer monthly rates, which will vary in price depending on your vessel's size. Boat owners and residents of San Diego can take advantage of the perks of being a part of a boat club, such as insurance, boat maintenance, dock fees, and trailers.

Places to Sail

San Diego has three harbors to choose from, Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, and Oceanside. Mission Bay and San Diego Bay are two of the most popular spots for setting sail in San Diego. Mission Bay is more geared toward smaller sailboats because there are numerous bridges along the way, and it can be a great spot for beginners. San Diego Bay is often known as “The Big Bay,” and it’s a spot ideal for larger sailboats because of how open it is.

San Diego Boat Rentals

You don’t have to be a boat owner to be able to spend the day out in the water because there are many options for boat rental in San Diego. Most companies have certain rules, such as needing to be 18 or older to rent a boat, as well as limitations as to where you can take the rental. Depending on your needs, you can choose available options such as powerboat rentals, sailboats, and luxury yachts.
